When you mask your subject like an animal is seems to make some of the edges too sharp or crisp making the subject / bird look like is overlayed on the background. Most of the time the amount of feathers or fur being chop off is almost negligible when you look at the photo before masking but when removed it's enough to make it look unnatural.

I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to adjust the edges to make it look natural again.

You might have more control if you turn off the Automask check box

Make a "smudge" brush by adjusting the sharpness or the clarity slider. You will want to experiment a bit on how much feather you want to get the perfect brush.

Save it as a custom brush because you may find yourself using it a lot!

Or...at 2:10 in the above video she talks about using a subtract brush. That might give you the look you want if the original looked good.

Piling on your idea, lowering the flow slider when doing that would also give more control of the transition.

It is a really nice addition to Lightroom, of course they have had masking forever the new way opens up many possibilities that would have taken me to Photoshop previously.
