Just to see what I may have done differently. This was taken on a cloudy day in the swamps of SE Louisiana at a distance of about 75yds from a slow moving, turning boat during a swamp tour. Nikon D810 camera - aperature preferred, Nikon 200-500mm lens, 500mm @ f/5.6, auto iso @ 2800, shutter speed 1/2000.

Hi Karl,
I love the shot. If you did any cropping the only thing I would do is give more room at the top. That’s. my 2 cents for what it‘s worth. Other than that I think it’s great.👍👍

Thanks much Ralph! There is more room above the head in the actual finished photo, but due to the size of the file, I cropped a bit to get it on the forum. Let me try this one

I like it. Great perch and the bird is in a nice position. The second version with more headroom is preferable IMO. You may also want to consider a 4x5 portrait format with the bird's head about on the vertical centerline.

Just to add to any confusion, I like the second pic more but I would crop out the tree on the left hand side as you did before, that way the heron would be less central and looking into the frame more. But keep the space above its head as Ralph suggested.
Hey Mike! I had the image printed 20x24 on metallic finish paper. On the print, I positioned the bird in the left third of the print, all but removing the tree and there is plenty space above the head. However, I appreciate all critiques and suggestions. Thanks much!
