From a state park, Pattison, near Superior Wisconsin last week. Colors were looking pretty good. Not the best shooting conditions with sunlight on part of the waterfall, but I think it turned out pretty decent...actually dropped saturation a bit in post. A five shot HDR.

What was your exposure compensation range for the HDR?

Hi Wayne, I believe a half stop between each exposure. I started slightly lower though, so I believe it was -1.5. -1, -.5. 0, +.5. It's just so-so I think as I think it would be better on a cloudy day, and maybe just a single exposure to get the waterfall more silky.

Nice scene. As for processing, I feel the picture is overexposed and lacks contrast. For my preference I would reduce exposure and increase contrast. I have seen many HDR images that lose too much contrast during the processing, something to guard against.

Having said all that, the few times I tried HDR shooting I screwed it up to the point that I'm afraid of trying again.

I'd agree, and interestingly I actually moved it to try to underexpose it a bit more in post. Hard to deal with sun and shade in the same frame, and it's a little too "punchy" as I look at it now. It's nothing I'd submit to a salon competition, but it was a nice day - just better to go back when it's cloudy I think.
