I intend to enter 2 photos in a local photography member show. Can you help me decide on the best images for composition and interest. Please Ignore image quality has I lowered it to get these to all load.

Thank you for your input ahead of time.

I agree - 1 and 3. 4 has the subject matter, but the technical execution and composition is not as compelling. On 4, ask yourself whether it's the photo or the subject that is excellent?

2 and 5 are common subjects with poses that are a little awkward and no interesting behavior. Great Blue Herons and Egrets need to be really special because they are so common.

I agree with the number 1 & number 3.
The bears a great shot, but I could see that Pelican in a large frame hanging over a couch on a white wall.
The eyes are really sharp & a fantastic colour & for me they set the image because you run your eyes up it's beak straight into its eyes.
Well done Sir (y)

First of all, are they being judged and if so, who is judging the entries?

Look at all of the photos at the same time and determine which ones jump off of the screen at you. That is called impact, and good judges look for it.

Like others here, I like number three, and it has the impact to be a winner, but the background is distracting and could be improved by having a homogenous background. Even if you can't change the background, include number three.

From there, I have to ask is number five cropped? If so, can you offer us an uncropped image to suggest edits for? If the entire bird can be included in the shot with a similar background, then number five is the second photograph that I'd include. If not, then number one is my choice for the second photo, but would possibly benefit by increased contrast and cropping the image some.

Thank you for being so specific. Photos can win awards but the winners are typically very odd and frankly strange. Kind of this some Oscar movie winners that were not crowd pleasers. I have never really liked the winners BUT there are a lot of “non-winners” that I enjoy and I like to submit each year as a member.
#5 is really barely cropped and unfortunately I didn’t get the tip of the tail. It is a 4 month old white Morphed Reddish Egret. Both parents are not morphed. It’s odd seeing the 3 of them together but not stellar photos of the family.
I can mute #3s background some. I don’t know photoshop and it’s not very easy in Lightroom but I’ll give it a shot since the group here really likes it. 😊

If this is "Camera Club" judging, based on many years of CC competitions, you're not going to win awards with photos that will sell or most people like. It's a different mindset and you can pick up some tips. I think #1 should go in, I'd crop a bit from the sides and increase the contrast as mentioned. I'd probably go with #4 and crop about 1/3 of the reflection from the bottom and I'd also try inversing the image right to left (so the beak faces left). My images used to win often but after several years, I found myself shooting images that I thought would do well at the club competitions and not images that made me happy. Most of what I thought were good (as well as many other folks!) scored poorly so I gave up the clubs.
