I recently bought another tripod and it will serve as a travel tripod. It is the RANGER LS-284CEX from Leofoto. First a quick look at the “Specs” and then my opinion. WEIGHT: just under 3lbs / MAX HEIGHT: 58”/ LENGTH CLOSED: 21 1/8” (measured from the tip of the mounting stud to the bottom of the rubber tips) / LOAD CAPACITY: 22lbs. I’ve used it a few times and I am impressed with every feature on it. All of the locks work smoothly and securely, there is no need to over-tighten anything. It comes with a small but useful leveling head (PHOTO); with my other tripod, I had to level the head by guessing how much to adjust the legs. The height of 58” is w/o a center post (there is no provision for a center post). When you add a ball-head or gimbal to the unit, the height should be enough for just about everyone. Earlier, I was very specific as to the closed length – here’s why; if you remove the rubber tips, the length becomes a wee bit shorter than the internal length of the Pelican Air 1535 case (it’s a travel tripod)! A few additional notes. Yes it is carbon Fiber, several items come with the tripod – a few tools, a rather nice soft case, and a set of spikes. The spikes are rather short but considering that I didn’t have any … Because there is no center post, the circumference of the closed tripod is almost identical to the new Peak Design Travel Tripod. So, once again, if you’re in the market for a well-made tripod at a decent price (around $400), give this one a close look. Is it not on the Leofoto website and because the listed telephone # is in China, I decided not to call them.
