Mac Catalina OS -won't import raw files Z7ii

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

This site is intimidating with the expertise, but figured I (as a novice) would ask anyway about this issue. Also, it is so confusing to figure out the basics of importing raw files to the computer and then moving them to a program to process. It seemed simple enough to me - as I imported from my D750 to my Macbook pro in Photos, and then exported them as NEF to my external hard drive . Then I use PS Elements (I am not sure I can so the real PS, but am happy with what PSE provides) to edit. However, now I have a Z7ii and that is not working. Reading all about this has made it even more confusing. So, my original question was -Has anyone else had an issue with a Macbook Pro (2015 running Catalina) showing only blank squares when importing raw files from a Z7II? From what I've read, there were issues with this for the Big Sur OS when it first was out, and supposedly that has been resolved. However, my Macbook will not install Big Sur. I have been working with Apple for 3 days to try to figure out where the glitch is. I've told them I only need to have Catalina allow my Z7ii raw file imports, just as it does from my D750 with no problem at all. They seem perplexed by that and just want to have me go to Big Sur. They say it's a Nikon issue and Nikon says it's an Apple issue. Just wondering if there is anyone else with this issue. I can find lots of discussion with issues with the Z7ii, raw files, and Big Sur - that have supposedly been resolved, but nothing about Catalina. I wish there was a primer on what programs are good for getting your raw files to your hard drive and then to your chosen editing software system.

I'm not familiar with Apple, but the z7ii is pretty new. If you have an old Photoshop Elements, it will not be able to read z7ii files. In this case you would need to upgrade to a newer Photoshop Elements. A workaround is the Adobe dng converter that would convert the image so it would work in older Photoshop. A link to the converter below.

Can you import a jpeg from your z7ii to your computer? If so then what I said above is likely the problem.

The camera shouldn't affect the downloads unless you are downloading directly from the camera. Download from the memory card, if that doesn't work, the problem is with your card. When I started using a CF Express card, Photoshop Bridge wouldn't recognize the card and I have to manually copy the files into Bridge. I am using Big Sur but had no problems when using Catalina with other cards. Photo should take RAW or JPG photos from any card it recognizes.

Apple issue / Nikon issue the answer may well be a little of both. I doubt if Apple updated the Photos app in Catalina for the newest RAW file formats. One may have the same issue with Canon or Sony. Unfortunately I have OS Big Sur and no Z cameras to help you test or troubleshoot.

In this same vein ...... Apple products (including its newest OS) will not allow post-processing on Nikon Zfc RAW images in Photoshop Elements. I upgraded to the 2021 PSE and that didn't help. Considerable research led to my discovery that the problem is with Apple's OS - that Zfc RAW images will not be subject to editing until the next OS is released. Seems very odd.

Not sure if this is helpful but I just opened a z7 II NEF file with preview on my Mac Pro (2013) running 11.5.2 Big Sur.
