Mandarin Duck

Ventured out the other day to a new location in search of Buffel Heads, I had only been there a short time before they started showing themselves. But it wasn’t until I was about to leave, after a couple hours of good shooting, that I got the surprise of the day looking across the pond I saw a male Mandarin Duck coming out from the cattails.

The Mandarin Duck is obviously not native to this region, so where it came from who knows, but what a beauty it was. It stayed out in the open for a very short time and then back in the cattails not to be seen again, at least by me.

Wonderful. I particularly like how the color of the water complements the colors of the duck.

Nice find Louie!👍

Sweet find Louie....I had a hard time finding them in their native location of Jeju Island S. Korea. And here you have one in WA!!
I do know there is one or more at Burnaby lake in Vancouver...or at least there have been in the past. I guess all pet trade escapes.

Beautiful duck. What a nice surprise. I've never seen one in WA, or anywhere, but I don't get out enough.
Thanks, this is only the second time I've very seen on in the wild.
How fortunate Louie. I've always wanted to see one of these in the wild, but no luck yet and my chances are slim. Nice shots.
Thanks very much Fred, I was totally surprised to see this guy come swimming out of the cattails.
Wow, Louie. You made the most of the opportunity. Excellent set of images the do the subject justice for sure.
Hi Dan, appreciate your comments thanks.

Thanks Geoff, this is only the second time I've seen one in the wild. The speculation is that it escaped from someone's private pond or the zoo, either way it's a treat to see.
Louis, beautiful duck! Nicely captured!
Appreciate it, thanks.
Nice shots, incredible duck Louis!
Thanks Irap.

My girlfriend asked if the duck was real, I laughed and said, "yes". I did a search on Mandarin Ducks, surprisingly we were able to see several varieties of Mandarin Ducks from around the world.
