I bought the adapter and thought I’d check in with the forum before buying a Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 lens for my Z9. I am tired of waiting for Nikon and kind of soured on their 200-600 f/6.3 announcement when I heard it will not be an S lens, but probably a Tamron. Any one using the Megadap 2 and Sony glass on a Z9?

You might or might not be aware that Tamron's controlling shareholder is Sony and that Tamron makes some of Sony's own lenses? Point us, for the non-exotics Tamron's lenses are on par with Nikon's and Sony's (and in fact Tamron might be their manufacturer).

Can you provide a source for 1) as I haven't heard that.
it's not consistent with their strategy.

witness the 100-400. these key lenses are meant to go toe-to-toe with the sony equivalents and they are not going to simply outsource them.

if you look at the lenses they have rebranded, they are in a completely different segment.

when nikon does come out with this lens, expect it to be incrementally better than the sony across the board (except price). that's how they are rolling.

Knew about the relationship, but am going on my own experience. I have f mount Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 and 70-200mm f/2.8 G2, 35mm f/1.8, 45mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 as well as a Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 G2 used on a D850 and D500 and have used them all on my Z9 with FTZII adapter. All but the 150-600mm G2 are stellar lenses. Because of the disappointing performance of the 150-600mm G2, I picked up a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6, which performs much better than the G2 in terms of IQ, AF speed and stability. I've come to the conclusion Tamron is great at the shorter focal lengths, but not so great at the long telephotos. IF the Nikon 200-600mm f/6.3 is a rebranded Tamron (John says not, but I am waiting on confirmation) why not go with the Sony 200-600mm with the Megadap211 adapter as the lens gets excellent reviews. My 150-600mm G2 and Nikon 200-500mm zoom with the lens barrel, so they are sucking in air / dirt. The Sony is all internal focusing. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but the spring migration is almost here in SE Texas and I would really like a better quality zoom to shoot it. Worse comes to worse, I can sell the Sony for the Nikon if the Nikon proves to be a better lens, but in the mean time, I've got a solid birding lens to use in combination with my 600mm f/4G with FTZii adapter and Nikon 1.4x tele.

Another thing I like Sony 260G is short zoom ring range: you can go from 200mm to 600mm in 90 degree turn, it helps to grab birds in flight quickly. Yup, internal zoom is really handy.

the nikon is likely going to be the better lens, but perhaps not by much. if you want a lens in a near time-frame, then the nikon 200-600 is probably off the table anyway unless it gets announced at the feb cp+ show (which is possible) and you are NPS and you get in line right away, and the wind is at your back the whole way.

things to be wary of:

1) there is no guarantee the adapter will continue to work as fw updates come out
2) ingress into the lens due to lack of weather sealing

good luck!

FedX says the adapter will be here in the next couple of days. I think I'll see if I can rent a Sony 200-600mm lens as the next step. Look like lensrentals.com has them for $105 for a 7 day rental.

I'm using the Sony 200-600 on my Z9 with the Megadap, but I'm only using it for video. Other than the fact that the Z9 cannot focus when zooming, everything seems to work well. That being said, video AF is far less demanding than stills AF, so I'd suggest paying close attention to Mark Smith video posted above.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Nikon version will perform much better than the adapted Sony, but in the meantime the Sony is more than satisfactory for my video needs.

BTW, Nikon's version of the 200-600 was silhouetted on their very first roadmap, long before Nikon entered into any agreement with Tamron, so I fully expect it will be designed and built by Nikon.

Following this thread, if anyone has more insights about the performance with a Z6 (first gen). I have a 200-600 sitting on a shelf asking itself if it should go and fund something else or stay and be attached to a used a9 or a7IV someday. I wouldn't mind paying $250 for the adapter is it works reasonably well to use with my Z6.

what would you get for the 200-600 to trade in for a z100-400? Problem: getting hold of a z 1.4 tele is nigh on impossible I hear

I don't know, I guess I could get about 1500 (it's in perfect condition, with the box, pouch and a camo neoprene cover). That's too little to fund a z100-400 which I don't really desire to have at this point. Like many I'm waiting for the z200-600 but at this point, since the Z6 AF is not exactly a killer but it still works well enough for me, it's worth knowing if that adapter would more or less maintain the Z6 AF performance, which would make the $250 price very much affordable to enjoy sony's 200-600, which I already have and won't have to pay for :)
I don't think (maybe wrongly) that Nikon is going to price its own 200-600 way above sony's, so trading one for the other whenever it's released can be done.

I have been using the Sony 200-600 on my Z cameras for months using the Megadap adapter. It works great. I don't worry about lack of weathersealing; I don't shoot in the rain much. I frankly doubt that the Nikon version will be any better than the Sony, as the latter is fantastically sharp, zooms and focuses internally, and is beautifully made. The only possible pitfall is what someone mentioned above, i.e., that future changes in camera firmware might cause some kind of incompatability. Hasn't yet, however. By the time the Nikon version comes out I will have had, literally, years of use from the Sony plus adapter setup, so I am sure I will have no buyer's remorse.

Thanks, that kind of feedback is exactly what I was hoping for. I ordered the adapter on Sunday directly from the Megadap website in Hong Kong. They acknowledged and shipped the order FedX on Monday and it arrived around 3:30pm here in Houston today, Tuesday. FedX must have a direct flight from Hong Kong to Houston. Amazing! I think I'll head over to Houston Camera Exchange tomorrow morning and see if they have the lens.

I want to add one caveat: I basically mounted the Megadap adapter onto the lens mount of the 200-600 zoom and have left it there, so the lens acts like a Nikon - Z mount lens. If I wanted (for example) to use the Sony 1.4x teleconverter, I would need to move the adapter from the lens to the teleconverter, and then back once I am through with the TC. I am reluctant to mess with that. I have not purchased the teleconverter.

I have the Sony 200-600 and it’s a good lens but keep in mind it’s not a GM like the 100-400 so Nikon is in step for the level of lens of the 200-600 as Sony is.

There are several lens collar foot replacement options, I find the arca-swiss foot is more convenient.

Tamron doesn’t make a 200-600 so I’m not sure why people think it will be a rebrand. If it was a 150-600 I could understand the thought but it’s not. Sony 200-600 is a G and GM so it will probably be very comparable with Nikon’s. I’m not a Sony expert but I believe their GM line is comparable to Nikon’s S line. I haven’t used it but I have heard good things about that adapter.

Darrell, For FE mount lens system, Sony has G Master lens, it's the top billing; a notch below is G lens harking back to the Minolta silver-ring lens, below that is the entry level non-marked lens. Before Sony filled the lens map, it used to have "little blue label" Zeiss lens, although many people rub nose at Sony Zeiss :D I feel there are no direct comparision between Sony & Nikon lens designation ladders.
