Male Brimstone butterfly fueling up on nectar in the Picos Mountains in Northern Spain 18/07/16. The Brimstone is suspected to be the species on which the name "butterfly" - or "butter-coloured fly" - is actually based. Quite common in most of Europe, an adult can live for more than a year due to its prolonged winter hibernation period. Thus it has one of the longest lifespans of any European butterfly. D750 with 105mm Micro and 1.4TC @150mm., f4.2, 1/640 Sec., ISO 200, handheld.

Quite right Harry, and although I haven't seen one myself over here , they are to be found in parts of Ulster in the spring.

Thanks Icarus --- so difficult to get a good focus with this one as there was a slight breeze that day --- spent a good 2 hours chasing this particular specimen around the hillside !
