Memory card(s) for D850?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Makes sense ... However, forgive me:

A combination of both XQD and CFExpress does not seem to be possible on my D850. Were there different configurations for the D850 over time, or are you referring to a different camera model? (My D850 allows for one XQD or CFExpress, plus one SD card, FWIW.)

Sorry about my confusing wording. You can use either XQD or CFExpress in the larger slot, and SD in the smaller slot. My comment referred to using a mix of either an XQD or CFExpress card in that slot. I've stopped using XQD cards and readers so I could simply limit my memory cards to CFExpress cards and reader and SD. That means I don't need to carry both XQD and CFExpress readers.

This discussion has been just about XQD and CFExpress. For test purposes, I removed the SD card. I've heard some reports that having an SD card in the camera for overflow may slow write speed when you were just using the XQD/CFExpress card slot, but I did not verify that in my testing.

I think Eric means using either an XQD or CFe card.

Scratch that, Eric has already replied!

How did you test? My test was 350 MB/s using a Lexar XQD card and 14 bit compressed RAW. That rate was sustained for 20 seconds after the buffer was filled. I had a much slower speed with some slow cards and with a card formatted for a different camera.
I just tested using data transfer to the card.
Of the 11 XQD cards tested the slowest was the Sony (probably because its the oldest) and that's the figure I gave.
Write speed is the only figure that really counts with memory cards.
I've been waiting for Nikon to go 16bit and the Z9 is hopefully going to be the full 16bit like my Hasselblad H cameras.

Exactly what did BIF shooters do before digital cameras came into being? Reading and trying to digest some/all of this technical chatter makes me all the more resolved not to even think about shooting BIF except with a Browning 12 ga.
