Memory cards for the D850

I have had my D850 since 2018 and love using the camera and results it delivers. I hope you get the same enjoyment and satisfaction from yours.

If speed is a particular issue for you in what you shoot, I recall reading a review online sometime after the D850 was released. What the reviewer claimed was that is shooting and storing to XQD and SD simultaneously, the overall write speed was reduced due to the SD card being used. What they determined was to obtain maximum camera write speed the SD card needed to be removed and therefore relying solely on the XQD card. The review provided a number of different tests and write times obtained.

As this is not an issue for my landscape photography, I didn't follow up any further to ascertain its accuracy and what it meant it real terms. If this might be an issue for you, other members on the forum might be able to provide more.

I have attempted an internet search today but could not find the review I spoke of, sorry. There are however search results I saw commenting will the same findings, though their articles lack technical quantification.

I finally took the plunge and purchased a 2nd hand D850. Looking forward to shooting with it.

1. I need to upgrade the firmware on the body. Can this camera use UHS-I SD cards? It is all I have at the moment.
2. XQD vs CFExpress.... I understand the CFExpress cards are faster than XQD but, using the D850, is there any advantage to using CFExpress over XQD? Is the camera capable of writing faster to the CFExpress card?
3. I shoot RAW and assuming you are using 14-bit, lossless compression.... how many images can be stored on a 64GB card? Aside from greater storage, am I better off with a 128 GB card? Are larger cards more prone to becoming corrupt? What is your experience?
The D850 seems to take most SD cards.
Unless you shoot video - XQD cards are really cheap right now.
And the upgrade from SD to XQD is massive. Both in speed and reliability. Unlike SD I haven't had a XQD or CFExpress card fail yet.
I store RAW on the XQD or CFExpress and send JPEGs to the SD to give to clients to view.
Unless I'm shooting Video (rare) 32GB or 64GB XQD or CFExpress are my preferred size. Each card is used only for a section of any shoot. 🦘

I believe that was changed with an early firmware update. I don't have my D850 any more to test it.
