Mid-summer, Milkyway it is.

A little different, no smoke in the air and the moon had set so I decided to go out back and see what happens. A little crop, dodge, burn, noise reduction, white balance, etc... Kind of an old postcard feel to it.

Hut, I think that is a great shot. The foreground “plants” I’m not sure what they are - is that there natural color or is that part of the “postcard look”? Really cool shot.

Thanks 😊
Yeah that is the natural colors. I had a Boling P1 led panel with me set low with maybe a 4000k White. The yellow plants are blossoming yellow rabbitbrush. They dominate the desert in the fall. I actually toned down the yellow in PS with the burn tool a little or it was too bright. 😎

It is really well done. That is another really cool picture. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks For the kind words. For me it’s all good practice and a good excuse to be outside. 😎👍

Single frame. Bodie Lighthouse, NC D850, 14mm, 20S, ISO3200, f4.5. Thank you to the unseen photog light painting to my left rear that outlined the tree.

Great photo, That tree looks super cool and the touch of colored light inside is a nice addition also. 2017?

Still experimenting with the Milky Way shooting, this was my second attempt to capture. The stray light was a bit of a bummer but oh well, it was mainly about the sky and learning exposure and processing.

Green River Overlook, Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park. For full disclosure, I did blend the Milky Way with the foreground in order to get this composition. Both shots were taken at the exact same location, panning to the right from the tree to capture the Milky Way. Standing on the edge of the cliff, I thought that was the best approach. Fortunately, my wife agreed! Beautiful night.

What amazing shots. Any tips on white balance? I’ve never really fixed that bit on my shots.
Sorry I seem to have missed this before. I usually try to spend time letting my eyes adjust to the natural light and match what I see (as close as possible) using live view. I select WB using the degrees Kelvin scale. I am sure there is a more scientific approach but this works for me. It is usually somewhere between 4760 and 5560 in my experience. I have friends that prefer to use presets such as "tungsten" or whatever or set the K scale below 4000 but I find them to be too far on the cool side and look unnatural to me. imho.

Also I shoot RAW and can easily adjust in post processing to fit my memory of the night.

Just having fun and learning as I go.

At least for us, I’m always happy when a shot turns, especially when it kind of comes together as you envision it, but even if it doesn’t just being out under the stars is always a great way to spend a night, with my wife with me, it just doesn’t get any better, well sometimes we add coffee & a donut, now you’re talking!:coffee:🍩

Here is one in the moonlight over Palouse Falls August '19. I feel like I have learned a lot since then, I need to get back over there and try again.
One of my favorite photos was done by Royce Bair at this same spot. Of course I had never heard of him at the time. He used low level LED lighting rather than moonlight.

Hut, I was going back through this thread, which is OUTSTANDING from all the contributors, but Hut this one of yours is really good. That is really nicely done. Bill

Even though the first quarter moon was high in the sky and bright I decided to go try a shot at a location nearby. Once I aligned the camera to eliminate lens flair I managed to get this shot. Nothing spectacular but it was fun to go out.
I like the way a sliver or more of moon can light the foreground and still keep things dark enough to see the Milky Way. Nice image!
