Mormon Road Closure Grand Teton Park

I will be in Grand Teton Park for 7 days starting later this week. Mormon Row is on my list of landscape sites to visit but I just found out that Mormon Row road is closed for some building renovations. Has anyone visited this area recently? Can you walk in from Antelope Flats Road to get some of the classic morning light photos?

I’ll be there Friday but I hadn’t heard this! Where did you see that?

I was there a week ago and it was all open, with no signs of any impending closure.

There is a restoration project at some of the Mormon Row properties going on this summer. It might not close roads but it might make some of the iconic barn shots less attractive. It does help that there's two very similar barns, one North of Antelope Flats road and the other (the actual Moulton barn) to the South so one or the other should be good for landscape shots. I'll try to get up that way in the next couple of days to see what's going on up there.

Since I’ll be there Friday and I’ve never been I’m curious is morning light the best or end of day? Also, what’s the night sky potential?

Morning light, a bit after actual sunrise as the sun comes over the Gros Ventre mountains, can be very good especially if there are interesting clouds over the Tetons. Evening will put both the mountains and the barn(s) in silhouette but can still be nice if the skies are interesting and you get a nice sunset over the range.

Definite night sky potential as skies are pretty dark up around Mormon row though I've done more wide field astro work either out on Antelope Flats proper, up by Signal Mountain or around Jenny or String lakes where skies tend to be even darker and you're further from the highways.

Any suggestions for afternoon/sunset locations? Any other sunrise locations?

Afternoon and sunset locations can be tough unless you get nice sunset colors over the Tetons which lie to the West of Jackson Hole. If you do get good sunset skies then there are lots of options to silhouette the Tetons but front lighting is a morning thing in Grand Teton National Park. That said, there can be great smaller scale scenic options like backlit Aspen or Cottonwood trees with their leaves glowing and of course wildlife options near sunset that don't involve grand landscapes.

For other morning to midday locations the classics include:

- Schwabacher's Landing
- The Oxbow Bend
- Snake River Overlook
- Jenny Lake
- Lupine Meadows
- Willow Flats near Jackson Lake Lodge

These are all well known so a bit of Google searching should bring up plenty of info on these and other iconic Grand Teton scenic locations. And of course there are plenty of roadside locations and marked turnouts that have great vistas looking out towards the Tetons.

Blacktail Ponds is good as well.

The top of signal mountain for sunset, but not the very top viewpoint as it faces the wrong way. The one just below the top is better positioned. There were fox up there and elk near the road last time I was there. Also there is a beach of sorts behind the signal mountain lodge and cabin for a nice sunset. Plus a nice sunrise facing the other way, for example near the deck of the lodge restaurant facing the marina.
