My a1 Review For Wildlife Photographers

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Wow. You must have a lot to say. This will get me through most of my morning workout :)
Yeah, all my full reviews are long - I gotta learn to scale back. I think the length hurts the viewership and they take forever to produce (this was at least 60 hours in the making, not including the time in the field of course). Still, it's comprehensive I think :)

I think you do a good job at not being long winded or redundant with your long review videos personally.

Yes the video was worth it, Steve. Liked it a lot and not too long for me ! Working with the A1 for 2 months myself now, your review of the camera is spot on and exactly what I am experience too. Love to see your setup guide too (y)

Here it is!

I figured I needed to get it out before the Z9 steals all the thunder in a few days!
Wow, what a reference work! I LOVED IT. Well done Steve and this will be very helpful for me and all the other A1 shooters. BTW, do you use the 200-600mm G OSS lens? I am heading to Botswana tomorrow and will be referring to this when I get wifi again. Andy

Awesome video and even more awesome pictures to illustrate the points.
I hope you follow-up with your set-up guide and also a review of that 600 f:4 GM.
And since Christmas is only 2 months away and I am starting to put my Christmas list together - how about an end to end processing workflow (including denoising, sharpening etc...) - similar to your focus stacking video course :)

Excellent review Steve. I actually like detailed reviews way more. Thanks a ton.

I would love too see a Sony A7 4 review!

No! Don't scale back. I hung on every word.

And, the most impressive aspect of an impressive review, of a very impressive camera, were the absolutely stunning images you have taken with this camera, apparently in the past 5 months or so. If I took even one, at the standard you hold yourself to, I would be ecstatic.

Great video. Well worth the time. Glad for the through coverage.

One question - why do manufacturer make grips which insert into the battery compartment vs attach to contacts at the bottom of the camera (like the D850)? The latter seems like a better idea to me.

I agree, that's one of the few things I really don't like about the A1. That flimsy little battery door you have to unmount and remount if you want to take the battery grip on and off - I don't see myself doing that often.

Thanks Steve, Another video jam packed with useful information from beginning to end! As usual you have set the bar unattainably high for other youtubers in which no dramatic amounts of Boca or poorly hung Christmas lights in the background will advance my photography skills quite like the wealth of knowledge you provide here!

I have to remove the battery door on my Z7 II and I would rather not. Canon bodies have this too, the only outliers seems to be Nikon with the D850 and D500 (perhaps others?)

Yes. I haven't used it much, but it's a good lens and very versatile. I'm taking it to Africa in a week and a half (Along with the 600 F/4 of course). The 100-400 was good, but I think the 200-600 is more versatile for what I shoot.

Thank you so much :)

Great review, Thanks, I enjoyed it. Not too long at all.
I picked up on a few pointers I will try myself.

Hoping Z9 doesn't steal the thunder before an A1 setup guide is released. 🤠

Thanks! That setup guide will be awhile yet. I'm heading to Africa again soon and I don't have time to do it before then.

Yes a bit long but you covered all the important aspects. I find the all the details useful and would not like to see you cut down the details.
