New Delkin Black claims no buffer on Z9...

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Let us know if you achieve the unlimited buffer. What capacity did you order?
will do. 650. i'm a bit apprehensive because 1) i hope i really get the _new_ card (i REALLY wish they gave it a different model name), and 2) the old cards were slower at the larger capacities, but they _say_ it's still 15xxMB/s. fingers crossed.

I got the "old" 128GB Delkin Black card, purchased in february.

I haven't tried to run the buffer out, but i can say that i have never hit a buffer limit while shooting and i have done some pretty long series of bursts.

i have the "old" 512, and it hits the limit about where people say, ~60-80 frames, ~4 seconds

I only shoot stills and prefer multiple smaller cards vs on large one. So I opted for the 128G Delkin Power. My own testing at 20fps, 14 bit lossless yielded 75 frames before bogging down. At 15 fps I got to 600 frames and stopped the test. In DX mode at 20fps I reached 800 plus and stopped the test. I haven't yet tried shooting with HE settings because Adobe nor DxO support the format yet.
Adobe ACR converts high efficiency raw* files. I use high efficiency raw* for most of my wildlife shooting. Seems to work fine for me. I then use Topaz DeNoise and Sharpen in PS as plug-ins after ACR has converted the files.

I don’t use LR, but given LR uses basically the same conversion engine, I would hope it will convert them too.

yah, afaik, LR will handle all the different raws from the Z9. i think the idea that it doesn't is a misunderstanding since there was an * in the comment about support, but if you look at it, it said the ARM processor version of LR (ie, tablet support?) wasn't there yet.

but i'm not inclined to shoot any of the HE modes, so i haven't played with it myself

Good to know. I'll give it a try. Though I plan to shoot lossless 90 percent of the time anyway.

Kind of funny, but I had finally ordered the ProGrade 325gb card at the sale price last Sat (supposedly the last day of that sale at $365), but on Sunday, BH had a super sale on the Delkin Black 512gb card + their card reader for $469 ($200+ off), so I canceled the ProGrade and got the Delkin, which was delivered yesterday - yesterday, the day the word came out about the new "bottomless buffer" Delkin cards haha. So, yes, today I did a return on the old Delkin card, and bought the new version (well, should be the new version - we'll see when it arrives early next week), for $30 more...

I've definitely hit the buffer a few times at 20fps LL RAW, so I'm hoping their claims hold up - the action doesn't stop when the buffer fills! :)

Also, I've stuck with LL RAW due to FastRawViewer not supporting HE* yet - probably will leverage HE* for above-base ISO action settings when they do.

Also, too, I do think we will see some version of RAW pre-capture with these cards - .3 or .5 sec pre-capture (I speculate). More of a question about 30fps (or 25fps) RAW since we're not sure where the bottleneck is in the I/O chain...

It is encouraging to see prices on these items start to come down a bit finally... Also gfx cards actually starting to be avail at not insane prices.

Cheers!

each time i buy some media.. there's a new twist just around the corner.

i decided to only buy one of these new cards and wait and see a bit if there's something faster around the corner.

Adobe says that they do support the Z9 HE* Except:
(*) Nikon High Efficiency raw compression modes are currently not supported on:

  • Windows ARM64
  • ARMv7 and x86 for Android
Since I have only apple computers HE* is supported on my iMac and have used LRC to edit both lossless compressed and HE*

I learnt my lesson last weekend when I was at a Tiger park and one of my 325 GB Prograde Cobalt cards failed. Luckily the camera showed an error message so I could take it out and use the other card. Best is to buy smaller cards.

Pricing is interesting for the new Delkin Black cards. Certainly less expensive that the previous version was.
75GB $130 $1.73 per GB
150 GB $175 $1.17 per GB
325 GB $425 S1.30 per GB
512 GB $500 $0.97 per GB
650GB $725 $1.11 per GB

So it seems that the 150GB card is way to go, being cheaper per GB than the 75GB or 325GB card. Unless you need a really high capacity card such as for doing serious video work. I'd rather have multiple smaller cards with less chance of losing all your work if a card fails. And in my recent shooting of eagles in Alaska, with lots of action and high speed frame rates and shooting lossless compressed, I rarely came close to filling a 128GB card in a morning or afternoon session. And I have a card in the 2nd slot so that if a card fills the camera keeps shooting by using the 2nd card for overflow.

As per NRs and Delkin's marketing. Supposedly this new card can write till card full without hitting buffer for full on Lossless Compressed RAW on the Z9. Crazy!!

Looks like B&H already has these in stock...snuck under the radar I guess: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...s_dcfxbblk325_325gb_black_cfexpress_type.html

Great cards & a must for a Z9 owner, but at £750 for the larger card (not

An amazing card & a must if you own a Nikon Z9, but at £741 for the 650GB makes that jump to a Nikon Z9 a little bit more out of reach for some people & the Z9 takes two of these!!!! (Prices quoted on the Grays of Westminster website who are pretty competitive)
You can get the 75GB card for £136 but don't plan on that lasting very long with this monster
Including with the charger at £65, if you were to load the Z9 up with these it would set you back a hefty £1547 which is something you should also need to budget for if you're thinking of buying a Z9.

I don’t consider storage part of the camera cost unless it’s some bespoke format (remember MemoryStick?), because you’ll use it in future cameras, too.

CFE will be the standard for future high FPS cameras, it’s now clear, so if you end up with a “Z9II” or “A1II” or “R1” in the future, it’s not like you have to buy those cards again.

I am looking forward to seeing how the 150Gb performs in practice. It is a comparable price to the current Sony Tough 128Gb cards and offers a bit more space and better performance. B&H emailed my shipping notice. Perhaps Delkin’s pricing will force some revision of pricing by other Cf Exp B brands.
I am not sure what card to buy for Video in slot 2 at this point. Given that 4K upsampled will be what I’d like to use, what cards offer best value? Is it the Delkin 500Gb?

The listed write and read speeds for these cards do not necessarily indicate how fast they are. The far more important number is the "minimum sustained write speed". Sony Tough did not perform as well as some other cards such as Delkin Black. Reporting says that buffer will fill faster with a 1700 write speed Sony than it will with a 1700 write speed Delkin Black. Delkin has not given the minimum sustained write speed for their new card. But if they are to be believed, the new Delkin Black will be able to maintain an unlimited buffer when shooting at 20fps with lossless compressed RAW.
We should have our hands on this new card soon and I am anxious to put it in the Z9 and see if their claims are true. I should be able to quickly see how many pictures I get before the buffer fills and the camera starts to stutter.

Agreed. I have tested my 128Gb Delkin Power, Sony Tough and Lexar cards in the Z9. I have had no buffer issues and have never filled the buffer on the Z9. I don’t use 20 fps as my standard setting but the Delkin Power performance was the best of the 3 when I tested the three at 20 fps. I have read several tests.

theoretically if their claims are true it has to be about 1200MB/s (60MB x 20fps = 1200)
The current Delkin Black cards already exceed that so I’m a bit skeptical of the claim that the Z9 will shoot with hitting the buffer. I might know this weekend if the cards arrives tomorrow as tracking indicates and I test it. I like having the 160GB capacity on the Angelbird cards so these should be a good alternative.

To avoid exceeding the camera buffer capacity the minimum sustained write speed to the memory device has to exceed the maximum sustained file size throughput, plus file write management overhead, if there is any.

Here's Delkin's claim for their latest Black CFExpress Type B cards with PCIe 3.0 interface:

General Features

CFexpress Recording Speeds

Utilizing a 3rd generation PCI Express interface, as well as supporting NVM Express, this BLACK CFexpress card boasts fast recording speeds for cinema-quality video recording, including data-heavy modes like 8K, 6K, and 4K at high frame rates and bitrates. Minimum sustained sequential write speeds exceeding 1530 MB/s (my emphasis) guarantee that data is written swiftly and safely to the card, capturing everything as you intended. It is also approved for real-time broadcasting and supports raw continuous-burst shooting.

According to the B&H website, the "minimum write speed" for the new 150GB card is 1530 MB/s, while the "minimum write speed for the old 128GB card is 1710 MB/s. Those numbers tell me why the new one is cheaper, but not why it's "better." Anyone here have an explanation?

i think the 1710 is maximum write speed, not minimum. it’s a bit frustrating trying to nail down the specs
