Nikon 1.2 Firmware Tests For The Z6/7ii

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I think us long term loyal Nikon folks, just want some good news concerning our systems. It’s hard to watch Sony always being on the leading edge. At this point I will continue to watch and wait. I am not buying anymore F mount glass. If Nikon does not start getting closer in the next year, I can honestly say I will consider switching. This is very hard as I have been fully invested in Nikon since 1985.

I'm optimistic that we'll eventually see a 2.0 firmware that'll make us all smile. I hope so, with all my Nikon books when they do well, I do well!!

Although I am not in yet for moving to mirrorles, I always look in your posts regarding this topic to stay informed. So, thanks @Steve for this one first.

But there was something else crossing my mind when watching the video and to be on the safe side, I apologize for this question as it is an off-topic here in this thread  ...

I remember that you mentioned in one other thread that you are not really happy with the TC function on your 180-400 and because you had sample photos in your video shot with the Z6II and the 180-400 with TC engaged I just would like to know what your latest impressions are concerning this lens and especially the problems with the TC you mentioned.
Did you achieve an improvement in any way ?

To me it was quite amazing when looking at the results of the Imatest at PL as I expected a TC made dedicated to the lens it comes with (like with the 800 f5.6) produces less IQ drop compared to normal TCs added to a lens. Because optical lens systems require a high level of precision to work properly, I thought the problem(s) I heard and read about may have something to do with the fact that it is engaged via this lever mechanism rather than put on the lens in the traditional way.

Actually, I ended up selling that lens, but more due to lack of use. I just couldn't justify having a $12K lens just sitting on the shelf all the time, so I'm back to using the 300 PF, 300 + TC, 500PF combo instead when I need that range. More lens swapping, but an overall lighter combo (and, actually more useful to me).

Just in case someone is wondering, I tested the firmware 1.2 on my Z7II with reptiles this past weekend. Animal Eye AF did not pick up the eye at all with a pair of turtles and a pair of snakes. It defaulted back to Area AF. The Canon R6 handled the two turtles very well - nearly 100% of the time it got the eye, but failed on the snakes and picked up a different pattern. The Nikon Z7II and the Canon R6 failed on the kingsnake 100% of the time.

I was running a workshop with captive subjects at an area nature center. These animals are used to being handled, and on a warm day they are very active. At close up and near macro distances, it was a struggle to focus on the eye and keep the subject in the frame, so Eye AF would be a great tool. Who would have thought that a I couldn't keep a box turtle in the frame because it was moving too fast? :)
