Nikon Canada to Reduce Warranties Feb 1, 2021

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Warranty for cameras and lenses in Australia is only one year and has been fir a long time. There is a program (in Aus) called My Nikon Life. If you register new gear there you get an extra years warranty.
The only warranty claims I’ve ever had was with oil spots on D600’s.

No surprise, Nikon Canada has been slashing support and the quality of service for 6 years now. First they closed the Vancouver repair and service centre, making just sending gear in for repair far more expense (for anyone not back east), then they reduced staff at the one location. Now they are slashing how long you get support. 1 year is patheic when you consider the cost of some of the gear and how complex it is. I’d be pissed if I bought a, 600F4E ($15k Cdn) or 800mm F5.6, ($19.9k) lens in Canada, and got a one year warranty. What a joke. You’d be better off buying a new car, at least you’d get support for a few years.

I heard there is no longer a global Nikon warranty.. so now it will be all local.
i.e. you can no longer buy say a camera in the US.. travel to Europe (say for work) and have support there!
Not only is Nikon slacking in the Tech race, now they start angering their loyal customer base.. doesn't seen very good for Nikon.
This will surely have consequences on future purchases.

In the past 6 months I had to send back 2 of my new lenses:
- the 24 F1.8 that had sever Front Focus (was discussed on this forum)
- the 70-200 F4.0 that had terrible AF hunting.. was sent 3 times till it was finally replaced

Nikon's Quality (and lens variation) has taken a dive in the past couple of years.. sadly.

I had a D300 shutter fail once. It was out of warranty but because it was a backup body not much of a shutter count. Nikon UK replaced the shutter free of charge even though they didn't need to.

My D600 went back three times for the dreaded bits of material on the sensor after which they replaced it with a D610. This was within the warranty period so again free of charge.

When the VR failed on my 24-120/f4 I ended up paying about 50% of the price of a new lens to get it repaired :(

Overall, I have no complaints about Nikon UK's repairs - warranty or otherwise :)

I know Nikon is facing intense financial pressure, but this seems like a high-risk decision. If the warranty must be adjusted, why not make it segment-based (consumer, prosumer, professional) with consumer products having the shortest warranties and professional products having the longest.
