Nikon remote

Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for reasonably priced wireless remote shutter release for D500.
Two approaches I've used with my D500:

- Meike vertical grip that ships with a wireless remote. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HXWTA4O/?tag=backcogaller-20

- A pair of Yongnou remote flash triggers that include a Nikon 10 pin connector for remote camera triggering
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NL6HC6U/?tag=backcogaller-20

This also looks decent and is more of a remote intervalometer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CD8HN14/?tag=backcogaller-20

These all support actual remote operation. For cable release and programmed intervalometer use (e.g. long time exposures or repeated exposures for star trails) I use a Nikon MC-36A but that connects with a cable and isn't truly a remote.

Thanks. No not yet. Have heard conflicting reports on SnapBridge. Is it worthwhile? I use a 500mm PF

I have had pretty good luck with SnapBridge and it has worked when I needed it to. It seems a little quirky to setup but one it is working it has been reliable for me. I have it setup to work with my D500 and my Z6 on both my iPhone and iPad.

Oh, I also meant to ask: What's the distance range of SnapBridge via Bluetooth?

When you use remote photography it swiches to WiFi mode and your device will connect to the WiFi of the camera. I have never tested the distance and like all WiFi signals it is going to depend on a lot of environmental factors.

This is a photo of what I have found to be a reliable remote shutter release, it can also be used as an intervalometer, bought from eBay.
It can be used on many different camera types, you just get the cable to suit your camera, the one shown is for Nikon cameras and works on a D500 (cable shown for D500).
This can also be used as a tethered shutter release by using the button shown on the smaller of the parts, the cable plugs into the front of the D500 and into the smaller device.
The button on the smaller device mimics the shutter release button, half press for focus and full press for the actual shutter actuation.
The button on the larger device has the same functions as the button on the smaller device and can also be pressed and pushed towards the LCD display and the shutter button will be held on until it is returned to its normal position.
The smaller device has small LED's on it the white block on end nearest the cable, green for half press shutter and red for full shutter actuation.

I have been using the Phottix Aion Universal Wireless Timer & Shutter Release with my D500 / D850 for the past 3 years now. Works flawlessly. Uses 4 AAA batteries. Works with rechargeable batteries too.

Hi Ben. I've used a wireless trigger for years now from SMDV with the snappy title of RFN-4. It's tiny so takes no room, uses a single AAA battery, and I can't remember when I got it but at least 5 years ago. I had a quick look on Amazon and it's still available. Personally I love it. One thing to watch is that if you walk around with it on the camera watch out it dosen't come unscrewed. Snapchat is ok in some circumstances but expect your battery life to go down much faster so if in the field be prepared.

Asking the same question, but going one step farther. I checked the web sites for the remotes recommended by members and have some questions:
I have a Nikon D500 with a Nissin I60A flash
1) Yongnou RF-603 II The D800 is listed, the D850 is referenced in a review as working and no reference to if it works with a D500? If this unit will work with the D500, will it activate the flash or does it require a specific Nikon flash or is it shutter only? The unit is $38.
2) Pixel TW 283 - DC2 The remote is listed as working with the D500. Does this unit work with a Flash? And if so, will it work with a Nissin I60A? $46 for the unit.
3) MDV RFN-4s The D500 is listed and same questions - Shutter ONLY?, If it works on flash does it require a Nikon Flash or will it work with Nissin I60A? Cost is $60
4) Nikon WR-R11 a/WR-T10 Remote Controller Set Cost is $276 (OUCH)!
5) Vello Shutter Boss III Cost is $100 Unit can be both shoot manually and timed. (Recommended by B&H)
Talked to a fellow at B&H and he said a 10 pin is required for Nikon D500 and supposedly, the units will trigger any flash in the hot shoe.
Looks to me like Nikon is ridiculously expensive, unless there is something really unique about its capabilities?
Appreciate any thoughts, feedback anyone provides..

Thanks for all the feedback and am going to check out some videos on different models. Want to have a remote shutter release with flash (hot shoe) capability.

Two that I am interested in are the GoDox X1N I-TTL for $85. The other is Phottix Strato-2 for $95. Both can be mounted in hot shoe and have a hot shoe on unit allowing flash unit to be mounted. One or both have 100 yard range, single/continuous/time lapse capability and TTL (some don’t). Curious if they work with BBAF activated?
Pluto Trigger is another I would like to check out as it has a motion sensor (bear walking through back yard)!

The RFN4s fits into the front of the camera so just acts like a shutter release. It doesn't use the hot shoe at all. I use wireless triggers from the hot shoe to up to 3 flash units (both Nikon and 3rd party) and it all fires away no problem.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have had some frustration getting both camera bodies connected to Snap Bridge and didn't even realize the "Remote Photography" capability was there. Went in and looked at it this morning and did an internet search "Snap Bridge Remote Photography" and found "nikonimglib.com". A great video with instructions! It is very easy to activate/deactivate (Airplane mode ON/OFF-while utilizing/ON). It was much easier than what I expected and while it doesn't have all the "bells and whistles", it does allow for adjusting Shutter Speed, Aperture, WB, ISO, Self-Timer, Exposure Adjustment, Focus (remembering BBAF implications) Shutter Release. Looks like it has some other features as well! Couldn't find anything on range. May like to expand capability to sound, motion, light, but this is definitely enough to get me started - Thanks!

I use and love the Unleashed remote, it's brilliant and gives you GPS location data too! I also have the Pluto remote, not as good and no GPS. Both are cellphone apps that trigger your camera.

I've been happy with the SMDV remote: http://www.smdv-usa.com/shutter-release.html It's the same as the B&H Vello brand but I got the SMDV one for less. They have had changes to their website since I bought mine, be sure to buy from their authorized dealers. IIRC it was about $60 for a transmitter/receiver pair.
I have been using this for a while. Got a second one so I have one on the D810 and one on the D500. Worst great and by changing the frequency you can use them without iterfering with each other or on same frequency you can have 2 seperate shots setup at the same time and take them simultaneously with with a single transmitter. Works very well.

Does the good old ML L3 work for the D 500? Cheap, reliable, and muchly copied by overseas folks. Nikon also makes a wired remote that seemingly works off the camera batteries, as I just found out when I took mine apart to see what kind of batteries it needed. It is more expen$ive, but not much... I think less than $40. My daughter gave mine to me one Christmas.
