The setup menu has an item called "Limit monitor mode selection".
the options include:
"Automatic display switch"
"viewfinder only"
"Monitor only"
"Prioritize viewfinder"
Although these options are pretty self explanatory, my selection has been "Automatic Display switch". If I turn the camera on while holding it far enough away then the monitor will display. If I then bring the viewfinder to my eye the monitor shuts down and the viewfinder becomes active as it should. If I then take my eye away from the viewfinder the monitor does not become active as I would expect. If I select all the options then the button on the side of the viewfinder must be used to toggle between modes. I find this to be awkward and confusing. I want either the viewfinder or the monitor to be active depending on the proximity of the camera to my face. Maybe I'm not selecting the correct option. Anyone have further insight into these options?

Go the the Wrench Menu: Limit Monitor Mode Selection.

This menu lets you limit the options available when you press the Monitor mode button on the side of the viewfinder. I use only “Monitor only” and “Prioritize viewfinder." That lets me quickly cycle between what I use with the camera to my eye and when framing images using the rear LCD.
