Non-wildlife culling approach

Karen, the dialog is good. The reason I need it daily is to go back and think through how I/We want to tell the story of this trip. Also there are 4 people, 6 cameras contributing to this all. Creating the collection I now understand and that was a good lesson. Including sorting by Metadata and then adding to a collection my making it the default and hitting B (which isn’t a Smart type of collection). But in the end to go back to a 23 day trip full of so many activities, I really need to do it by day, and that’s where I had to manually make 23 smart collections which could be really easy if I could just choose a start and end date and shooting interval (1 day, 2 days etc). I wanted to confirm I wasn‘t missing something in that regard.

For those following this thread, the collections by day proved very useful. Along with my detailed TripIt itinerary and receipts from my Wise card, I was able to put together a pretty good narrative of the trip to share with my co-travelers who can then add their own perspectives to each excursion. This will allow to focus on the themes we want to cull images for and makes the process of choosing much easier. There will be some themes that will cross over all the days. For example, I was fascinated by the patterns and shapes in Portugal.

As a side note if you travel a fair amount, look into TripIt and the Wise card. TripIt has a free version and basically you forward your itineraries to [email protected] and it will create a itinerary with all the needed details. Further you can restaurant reservations manually an it will add all the details via lookup like address, contact info and website. This is one of my most used apps. The Pro version has added features.

The Wise card is a multi-currency card based on Mastercard. You transfer home country $ into the account, and then you convert to other currencies. You can hold multiple currencies at once. You get some ATM access for free each month. You can control the card for security from the Wise app. So after I use an ATM, I turn that feature off. You can freeze the card entirely. They are transparent on fees and give you the big bank exchange rate (likely the best out there). We have found the ease of use and rate/exchange structure to be excellent. For sending money abroad - like a kid with a Wise card - there is no cheaper way, and it's instant. Compared to a CC, it is usually about 1% better, but that varies and you don't get points. We still find the ATM access and ease and security to be the best so we prefer it over our CC when traveling.

Hope some find this of use.

I use the star system. 3 *'s must be in focus, well composed and a keeper. 4*'s Stand out images for expression, pose, location, etc. 5 *'s (I get very few of those!!!) are simply outstanding and worthy of sharing with the world! LOL!

If I have multiple images of the same location, situation, etc.....I cull it down to the very best 2 or 3 images.

I keep about 1-2% of my wildlife shots. For architecture projects, the keeper rate is more like 70-80% since I am slow and deliberate in creating the compositions but often times needs to take 3 or 5 exposure bracketed shots.
I use the same rating system for my sports pictures. I cull first in Photo Mechanic since I can shoot 1500 - 2000 images at a single event. I then import the keepers (5-10%) into LR for editing.

Short update here on what I am trying.
First I find the keywording process limiting and made a suggestion to Adobe about Keywording using a Second Monitor.
What I have decided to try is deviating from the rating system others have used above to sort of blend Steve's color method for stacks. I rated everything that I want to process a 4, and when I develop them the ones I don't use will go down to a 4 and the ones I think are best will go up to a 5. In addition, from the ones I rated a 4 I did another pass and labeled them blue to further narrow my choices. To complete my keywords, I filtered for the 4 images, set to grid view to larger thumbnails , and had the Keywords open on the right. I then used a combination of ways to finish: spray can, keyword list, keyword suggestions, keyword set, typing in. I found with a vacation like this, that 9 keywords in the sets and suggestions was too limiting for lots of variety in images taken over a 3 week vacation.

If you like the suggesting, please upvote it.
