Official Nikon Z8 Launch And Discussion Thread

Thanks Steve looks great! This will likely be the camera that moves me into mirrorless. I like the body size and hybrid abilities since I enjoy stills and video. I look forward to the reviews!

And Thom Hogan has published a string of new Z8 related articles....

useful for comparisons- https://www.zsystemuser.com/nikon-z-system-news-and/what-does-the-z9-have-the.html

Is there anything that the Z8 has that the Z9 doesn't have?
Apart from plane detection and skin softening?

So far, I'm rather disappointed. Basically a Z9 with a small battery at a way too high price for a D850 replacement.

I guess, we will get a major FW update for the Z9 soon.

With the same layout, controls and features this camera makes a very good backup camera for the Z9 with a savings of $1600.
But I have two Z9s which for me is the perfect backup camera. The only advantage of the Z8 over the Z9 is the lighter weight of the camera, but for that I would have to give up the vertical grip, the pair of CFexpress slots and the longer battery life of the EN-EL 18.
When I really need a lightweight walkaround camera with a small lens - not for wildlife photography but for walking the streets in Paris or Venice - I have a Z7ii. Maybe the Z8 would be a good replacement for my Z7ii. But it is larger and heavier than the Z7ii, 32 oz vs 21 oz. Z9 is 47 oz.

too much camera for me I'm sad to say. My Z6 needs replacing, but with all those features, like the Z9, it'd be just a waste. Sadly no lenses announced, that's what I was really hoping for,

A 45 megapixel stacked sensor camera that gives access to Nikon’s Z lenses for $4000? Wow!

While I do use the grip, enjoy the bigger battery, and use the B slot for CFExpress cards on the Z9, I would certainly save $1500 and go with the Z8 if buying today. Flagship performance in a body that’s nearly one pound less in weight and lists for $1500 less? That’s a crazy attractive price.

It's basically the MILC version of the D850. With higher frame rate. I'm not a fan of the two different cards but for landscape shooting etc, the SDis fast enough and is easier to deal with for uploading to laptop etc. So not all that bad. I've got a couple of fast SD cards that I bought for the A1 while I had it. It will be interesting to see what kind of buffer capacity they yield.

The Nikon USA live launch flagged the D850 comparisons.... Just from the lanuch and RicciC's comparison, and short lists above by ThomH...

I'm sticking to the Z9, for a couple of important reasons. And I'm now watching Used Z9 market closely :)

Looks like the Z 8 loses the 3 buttons below the rear LCD screen - labeled LAN, WB, QUAL, and no voice notes (mic) nor vertical i button.

I will miss - QUAL, voice notes and the vertical i button. I use the QUAL as a lock button for front and rear control dials so I don't accidentally adjust Shutter speed or aperture.

I seldom fill up the primary card so having a slower SD card as overflow is not big deal for me.

Dan - what time is in alaska? Have you gone to bed yet :cautious:
