Official Nikon Z8 Launch And Discussion Thread

You are probably missing the slowdown from 20FPS to ~15FPS at the ~80 shot mark. To confirm, shoot a stopwatch on your phone and then review the images...you will see that the FPS does slow at around the ~80 shot mark regardless of card. But it doesn't do a big stutter or slow to a crawl...just drops FPS to around 15FPS and continues like that for longer than one would need.
i think people looking too closely at the "when does it start to slow down" with a stopwatch are probably going to get a pretty big margin of error since it's a small timeframe and reaction time is poor.

i would suspect a better option would be to run a long test like a couple of minutes and then just compute the frame rate from that.
 
It could be for sure. I also was thinking about how HLG is backward compatible with SDR and maybe (at least in Adobe's case) the are simply not rendering it it with the extra HDR elements (or whatever is is LOL). Although, by the same token, the histograms in Raw Digger don't seem to have more "data" in them - just a bit different distribution. Also, the files sizes are interesting too. The HLGs are about 9MB smaller - maybe due to the better compression offered by HEIF. Although 9MB difference seems like a lot.
For now, especially with the limitations of HLG, I think SDR is maybe the best bet for most shooters. Still, I'm not done working through it :)
Not that I know anything but "surely" one shoot videos in SDR is one expects to perform only very minor post processing and post it to a web page or social media. Very very few folk have HDR capable monitors and so most stuff on line is effectively sRGB.
Recording vids in HLG (h.265 10-bit and HLG rather than SDR or N-Log and using HLG quality/picture control), then processing and colour grading to eek out the most from the footage before then outputting in SDR
-- I assume the discussion above the same just for stills -- HEIF works in 10-bit and therefore has more tones than 8-bit JPG - but what are the choices for stills shot in HEIF on the Z8 -- is there a Normal Quality and a HLG or Higher Dynamic Range option? Most of us simply do not know what is available in the Z8.

I assume you will be addressing this in you book -- please remember we primarily stills shooters are not used to this video centric language.

LOL, I know very little about video, so no worries there! In fact, I think that's probably why this is presenting a bit of a challenge to sort out and make recommendations. I just don't see a lot of need to shoot HLG for stills. Nikon also warns that you need a HLG compatible device if you want to enjoy the full tonal range - which, as you say, it's vey common at the moment.

In addition RAW holds more data anyway. It sort of seems like HLG allows a more data with better editing potential than a JPEG for those who want a "ready to go" format with an option for some adjustment. Personally, I think shooting RAW does the same thing with more data.

Also, there are not options for quality with HLG, not for DR anyway. You can change the size of the HEIF files and the "quality' (like Basic, Fine, etc) but that seems to be about it.
 
@Andy Miller Photo UK Thom noted in his presentation that you can choose between SDR and HLG. by changing that setting, you either get a JPG OR a HEIF when you've selected to get a JPG/HEIF. i didn't catch it all because my brain kinda tunes out when people are talking jpg :-D
I think Andy was wondering if there were any HLG exclusive options for quality. I don't see any - did Thom mention any? Maybe I'm missing it (although, I've been deep in these menus since I got the camera LOL )

What I do is shoot the stopwatch for 20s or so and then review the images to see how much time has passed in a given number of shots. I'm not watching the stopwatch as I shoot.
 
Shot the 800pf on the z7ii yesterday, The 800 is eating the Z7ii battery pretty quickly. I have a feeling the Z7ii with its dual processors isn’t so power efficient as the Z8. Its only a gauss.

The Z8 Is Here :) Below is my summary, the press release, and some photos. Note that I will be getting a Z8 delivered to me in the next hour or two and I'm planning on a livestream, hands-on discussion around 2:00PM today to answer all your questions. Also, note that I did not have any field time with the camera prior to the announcement, but I'll have the loner for 20 days. This will allow me to use it and provide additional field info via Youtube (regular and shorts) and Instagram. Also, note that my Z9 setup guide will soon turn into the Z8 / Z9 setup guide. I'm making the adjustments now, however, everything is pretty much the same - if you have the Z9 guide now, you can use it to set up your Z8.

Quick Summary

The Z8 is basically a "baby" Z9. It has the same AF system, same stacked sensor, same performance, frame rate, buffer, viewfinder, etc. etc. The main differences are that it doesn't have a grip (although one will be available, the MBN12, for $350), takes a single CF Express in Slot 1 and a SD card in Slot 2, and does not have an Ethernet connection, replacing it with two USB-C slots (one data, one charging). The camera now also supports HEIF format, which is basically a higher efficiency version of JPEGs. (Basically, you can save the same quality file in less space than a it would have taken in JPEG format.)

The camera uses the standard En EL 15C style batteries used in just about every other Nikon camera in the last decade. The camera is approximately 30% smaller than the Z9 and 15% smaller than the D850.

Weather sealing sounds like it's a bit better than the D850 but maybe not quite up to Z9 standards.

Pricing is $3999.95 and should be available May 25th. Also, I was told by that Nikon feels like they have a better supply of these and they are better prepared for the demand.

It will be interesting to see how the old EN-EL15c battery goes in the Z8, also how the Z8 is bigger than the Z9 once the battery grip is added, in a couple of years it would be a good upgrade for people like me who still use the Nikon D500 and can't afford this camera yet. In Australia 1 of our leading camera stores are selling the Z8 for $6,999.00 Aust dollars or Z8 with a 24-70mm F2.8 s pro kit for $10,500.00 Aust dollars.
 
We can access Thom Hogan's interview/zoom here he says that when shooting JPG/HEIF one has to select SDR for JPR and HLG to access HEIF. That is it for JPG/HLG.
He goes no to say that this tone choice also impacts RAW -- I wonder if it changes the image used for the histogram from an 8-bit JPG to a 10-bit HEIF - if it does then I would select HLG, provided it does not adversely impact anything else. Selecting HLG also selects BT2000 colour space, not sRGB -- this is close to P3 -- which is great for me since I use great apple monitors and these are all P3 compatible++.
 
I also heard Thom say he was trying to get his book out before 25th May -- so @Steve -- the race is on matie !!!
Who is running the book -- that a betting reference BTW.
Mine will be out by then :) Mine is just an update (with some new material of course), so the update is going well. If Thom's is a completely new book, that's pretty fast.
 
BTW, for anyone interested in understanding why Nikon is offering 10 bit HEIF files in HLG (which is what they seem to be doing in the Z8 from what I can glean), Richard Butler wrote a good piece a year or so ago explaining the format and the benefits of a hybrid gamma/log curve. It's worth a read (before Amazon pull the plug).
 
Thom Hogan spoke a bit about HLG and said one can select HLG and still shoot in Raw. The histogram was a bit different between HLG vs the standard option. Im not sure if this has any impact on Raw files other than the fact that if one uses HLG and the effects show up on the EVF, thereby helping with setting a more accurate exposure, particularly in hi contrast scenes.
 
@Steve -- another one for your book -- does selecting HLG impact exposure or the histogram or exposure when shooting Lossless RAW with a Z8?

This builds on Thom Hogan's remark that one has to select HLG rather than Standard to select between JPG and HEIF AND a long while ago we had a discussion on picture control settings on the Z9 and what user settings "appear to" influence AF and exposure.

I still shoot FLAT and wonder if FLAT and HLG will give me a more representative histogram and exposure when shooting Lossless RAW
