Official Nikon Z9 Launch, Info, and Discussion Thread

Let's pause a moment to congratulate the winner of DPReview's Still's Camera of the year. 👑 Truly an amazing achievement! 🎆

And the Sony A1 was without doubt the first mover and a terrific effort. Best wishes for a future A2.

I personally think reviews in general are overrated regardless of whoever is doing them. If I’m going to purchase a camera that cost $5000 to $7000 then I’m going to go by how I like it. Honestly some of the things that I’ve bought throughout my life that I have liked the best, have had mediocre and some even poor reviews. I think we as a society are becoming too dependent on what others think and are losing the ability to think for ourselves. I am by no means trying to be argumentative or create conflict but I think we as photographers, whether enthusiast or professional should be able to come to a conclusion on whether we want an item or not without influence from others. In fact a lot of these online reviewer‘s on YouTube and such are nothing but a bunch of Clickbait overrated windbags but again that’s just my opinion. The beauty of purchasing from most online retailers is, you have the ability to send the item back if you don’t like it. Just my two cents.

I trust Steve Perry and Mark Smith to give unbiased reviews for me to base a decision on. Company reps not so much. I would never return something just because I changed my mind. Once I pull the trigger it’s on me.
I’m not saying that I don’t trust them, all I’m saying is if I’m going to spend that much money there’s gonna be more weight placed on how I like the item. I’m not too fond of returning items myself but if I pay that much for something and I absolutely don’t like it, it is going back.

You cannot trust any human to be completely objective. Most people making a living on YouTube won’t come right out and trash something. There is a certain decorum that I think you must keep so that no one gets too offended. For example, the 200-500 in my opinion is a piece of junk, I am not considering price point, just objective truth when comparing across ALL similar focal length lenses.

I'm not going to buy something because "they" say to do it. If I am wanting a certain feature that will help me I can look to those reviewers I trust and base a decision on which way to go. It's just a camera not life or death....lol That said, I am sorely disappointed in the autofocus speed of my 200-500mm I would never buy another one....
Went through two and gave up. Too soft. Obviously, compared to my 500 f4 prime it was going to be lacking but I’d rather not compromise if I don’t need to. But l, I remember watching peoples reviews about how the 200-509 was the best thing since sliced bread.

The 200-500 is a good example of feedback that lacks context. It is pretty good for a consumer tele-zoom, but compared to a pro prime or pro zoom, it's going to fall short. Of course the price point also is relevant for context. I have the 200-500 - but for me it has a niche use for handholding or on water.

The 500 PF is similar - very good for most people but slightly short of the mark on a tripod compared to a 500 f/4, 400 f/2.8 or 600 f/4 (which are all much bigger and more expensive). It's smaller size and lighter weight that increase the value - as well as price point.

Like I said earlier, some of the best items I own and have owned have been items with not so great reviews. Reviews are often skewed and completely misrepresented to increase sales. The z6ii and Z7ii imo are phenomenal cameras for what I do but others hate them. I have shot with a Sony A9 which is a good camera but not for me. Having said that, there’s nothing that blows away a D850 or D5-6 in the mirrorless world! I’m certain mirrorless cameras will continue to evolve but none of them are light years ahead of the flagship dslrs. Some of my favorite images were shot on a d700 and d7200 and those cameras are still fantastic cameras. I hope Nikon hits it out of the park with this camera but even if the don’t, it’s still a move in the right direction.

It definitely won't be a step backwards, great things ahead
I really want all the camera companies to succeed because it’s going to create innovation over the next several years. Truthfully there’s not a camera made in the last decade including the newest stuff that isn’t capable of making incredible images. I have contemplated switching brands a couple times over the years but no matter how hard I try with Sony or Fuji, those two cameras to me are just not doable at least for my liking. I definitely think they have some amazing cameras but if I were going to switch brands it would be to canon, just because of the menus and ergonomics which are very similar to Nikon. In my opinion the best built cameras hands-down Has to be Fujifilm cameras. Those things are like bricks but their ergonomics and menus are atrocious. I would honestly like to see a Canon/Nikon merger. I think the next 3 to 5 years is going to be amazing as far as the technology that’s introduced.

Anyone got any recent updates about when they're shipping? In India it was initially last week of November/ first week of December and got pushed to 15th December. The latest update I got this morning is that it's delayed further, maybe last week of December.

The only thing I have heard officially is "in December". I suspect it is the first half of the month, so December 15 still sounds about right - but that is a rumor from a source other than Nikon.

You don't ship 10,000 cameras and a bunch of 100-400 lenses without planning. But narrowing it down to a date when you have multiple steps involved can be difficult and largely outside your control.

Hopefully we can get some more info this week if they will be going out soon, and if theres enough initially to meet the NPS orders. Sure would be nice to get a clue as to what to really expect for availability for the early orders and numbers; Canon said 6 months for the R3 if you order now so hopefully Nikon would have said something by now if theres going to be a delay.

Hopefully soon less hype and more real world reports of production model Z9s out there.

I assume that the majority of pre-orders was made during the first few days of the initial release date. I wonder if people are still pre-ordering the Z9 from this date onward. There has to be a point where there is little to be gained by pre-ordering over simply waiting for the camera to be available in the stores.

There was someone recently who posted that BH told them that at that time they had enough being delivered in the first wave to satisfy all their current pre-orders.

Hoping this is true - I opted to "go local" and hopefully that's fine. I went through them in August and was 8th, but then got accepted into the club at NPS, so the morning of launch sent in my info to NPS and got a confirmation that morning about 20 minutes after I got an email from NPS. I'm hoping it makes no difference going local vs. BH/Adorama; I'm trading in some stuff and prefer the local route, and would rather avoid the Fed Ex notification that my package has been sent to six other locations and is coming "by the end of the day" only to come the following day :)

Retired now,
I spent 40 years in logistics including the last 30 specifically working in air freight.
Domestically, the thought of moving a lot of product on Dec. 15 is just stupid, unless the need is to have it at the final destination by Dec. 25.

I could get into a lot of specifics why this is a bad idea, but I think common sense will supply a general understanding.

Today is the 6th, If distribution isn't well underway, best to wait until at least the 26th.

I've spent the last 60+ years celebrating Christmas, and agree 100%! :)

Of course, last year my Z7ii was delivered a week before Christmas, but not without some stress.

I've wondered about this. Surely it means there are a lot of Z9's already in the country.

I don't want to think about the alternative.

On a large electronics/media shop in france they mention it's going to be available (as in-store available) from december 10. Could mean nothing at all, could mean they have a solid shipping date. Only 3 days left to know!

The advantage I see is that once camera appear on the shelf, they may get snapped up quickly so you will play a frustrating game of whack a mole. Pre ordering will help you avoid this headache.
