More Hurry up and wait news

Info I received today:

  1. Nikon's new lens announcement has been delayed (again) until Tuesday 12/14. This announcement should consist of the formal introduction of a new Z series 85mm f/1.4 (or f/1.2), and a development announcement for another lens which is unknown st this time
  2. The Nikon 100-400mm & 24-120mm lenses are still scheduled for initial deliveries on 12/16/2021. We will inform everyone on those waiting lists, as we learn more.
  3. The Nikon Z9 initial deliveries have been pushed back a week, and will most probably occur in the USA on Thursday 12/23 - but they could be delayed until Monday 12/27. Of course, I will keep everyone informed as I learn more details.

My discussions have also revealed that the general allocation of Z9 cameras in December will be VERY small. Every authorized should be receiving the same, small amount of cameras - no matter how big that dealer may be. I cannot tell you exactly how small the deliveries will be, but that # can be counted on one hand. At the same time, Nikon will make a separate allocation to NPS (Nikon Professional Services) members. Some, but not all, NPS members will receive cameras in this first allocation. The good news is that future deliveries will include many more cameras for allocations to ALL photographers. At this time, Nikon is unable to tell me how quickly, or how frequent, our Z9 deliveries will be in the near future. However, the discussions lead me to believe that there will be at least 2 allocations each month.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Thanks - hopefully we get more clarity. Bummer about the first shipments. I'll be curious how they disbribute to NPS; Nikon Rumors seemed to indicate that if you were NPS and ordered that first day they were going to try to get you a Z9. Thanks for any updates. Hopefully ordering within a half hour of the announcement will allow me to be one of the lucky ones.

And this is the internet in 2021/22

If the Z9 was a 24mp low light monster people would cry because it's not 46mp. Now that the Z9 is announced as having 46mp people cry because it's not a low light monster.

10-15 years ago, ISO of 800 would give very noisy results. Now we can shoot till ISO 6,400 easily if we do some good editing.

There is no reason why we should not aspire for more. Plenty of room for improvement.

That's a good thing isn't it, else we would all be stuck with 2 decade old cameras as no one would aspire for better things & companies wouldn't innovate.

We will have to wait and watch. Except the high ISO performance where lower MP bodies still have an advantage at a pixel level, everything else you mentioned like speed, video features, pro connectivity etc. are already in the Z9. Unlike Canon, both Nikon and Sony do not position their Z9/A1 as one level down from being called a "pro body".

Also, during the DSLR days, there was a clear segregation between a pro grade body like a D6 or D5 vs all purpose bodies like the D850 and after the launch of A1/Z9, there isn't enough difference to justify a lower MP body. I feel 45-50MP is the new 20MP equivalent pro bodies and we will see some crazy megapixel monsters like 80 or even 100+ MP that will be the D850 equivalents. That's just my guess and i could be totally wrong :)

For those using a f2.8 glass the current ISO performance may be enough.

Not for those using slower glass. I would love to see 4-5 stops of better ISO performance & 2 stops of improved dynamic range performance on the cameras.

Z7 ii in comparison to Sony A7R3 & A7R4 lags a bit in terms of ISO performance. I would like Nikon to improve that & also come up with a 24 or 33 mp full frame low light monster better than the R3.

A mostly noiseless pic at ISO 8000 even nearing twilight will make a massive difference for birding photography.

Bummer! I was hoping to have a Z9 for Christmas! Thank you for the update!

Not sure if it's a mistake but on Nikon France's website the FTZII adapter is "in stock". It's a start (or a mistake).

I saw the same in Switzerland, and wanted to order, at which point it became "delivery in 1-3 weeks". That to me says it's in some kind of stock somewhere in the world, not really in stock and ready for delivery :(

Ok, too bad I'd rather start directly with an FTZII rather than buy a version I :)

Not that it means much without the camera, but I got a preparing to ship notification on the FTZ II today. I'm in the US. That's some progress.
True, but I'd rather have the FTZII without the camera than the camera without the FTZII. The first option has me with a $250 purchase that I really can't use. The second one has me with a $5500 purchase that I really can't use.

It could be that the stock sold out before you got your order in. I'm curious as to why it's now "delivery in 1-3 weeks."

What is your source, RockvilleBob? Pushing the deliveries from 12/23 to 12/27 doesn't really make any sense to me. After all, not much is going to be happening in the retail world, especially camera stores, that weekend with Christmas on Saturday, is it?

I prefer not saying other than a fairly reliable source. Naturally I hope this source is wrong since I would like my Z9 delivered before 2022. We'll know one way or the other in a few days.

Nope, it's not the case. It's still listed in stock, even today.

They had some disclaimer about "given the current exceptional circumstances" blah blah, but 3 weeks? I'll wait for a local shop, I have s FTZ 1 so no too much of a hurry.

Edit: tried again, and this is the message in German:

Aufgrund von Versandschwierigkeiten wird Ihre Bestellung später eintreffen als geplant. Ihre Bestellung wird innerhalb der nächsten 1-3 Wochen geliefert. Sobald diese verschickt ist, erhalten Sie eine Benachrichtigung. Wir danken Ihnen für Ihre Geduld.

Basically, due to "shipping difficulties", whatever that means.

How about a generalization of your source? Do they work for Nikon? A large camera store? are they telepathic? Ouija board? lol
