weird little tidbit. recording the evf has an impact on performance. not clear in what cases or what it effects, but i had not considered that and i indeed was planning to do evf recording to study things

Slowly learning how to use Z9 in 3d using a single point.
manual 70-200mmFL f2.8, 20fps, 1/2500 Matrix 0 ev Cobalt card
these are JPEGs out of camera as taken hand held, just down sized to less than imb

didn't miss a frame ....

stuck like poo to a blanket ........awesome.......

the shot of the dove on the hoist looked challenging but was a piece of cake the focus didn't let go or shift, just stuck like glue as you can tell and stayed in te focal plain, and the bar behind it is not in focus which is what i wanted to see.
the fourth shot, the focus stayed on the dove even when partly concealed behind the post.
Slowly the lap times are going up LOL

Will be doing more bird shots on the beach in the coming week, i have not had any issues with the Z9 what so ever, have a way to go.

I recon everyone should settle down watch a session of Bold and the Beautiful to de stress and just focus on photography, and like nearly all the internet if its not what you like talk with you mouse or feet which ever, we are always going come across somethings that are not what we want to see or hear.
There has been a lot of good things in this forum and a lot of things that are of help, you just need to be less sensitive LOL.
I don't care what brand or what gear is on the table or by whom, i go on what i see and believe or learn.

I think all gear is similar, i am not a fan of 3D and all the high techi stuff, but hey i will keep an open mind, explore what i can and decide if its for me or not, i am a lover of DSLRS for certain reasons, but i have invested in a Z9 and i am putting my skills or ability to learn more to the test......

There are far to many good knowledgeable people in this forum that offer lots of information and help, lets not spoil it because of a few bad apples..... as my girlfriend would say go hard or go home.

Happy 2022

These images on my big mac look deadly sharp, embarrassingly not so in this forum for some reason, not certain what happened but I assure you they are pin sharp on my computer prior to sending.

A programmer I was working with talked about having to know where the glass walls were in an application and how to navigate around them. It has been much the same with every camera I have owned where I needed to spend the time to learn what worked and what did not and the manual was only a starting point.

Curious as to the battery life people are experiencing with the Z9. I was surprised to read Nikon's specs that with the EN-EL18d a battery charge was good for up to 740 exposures. With my D850 and the EN-EL15 battery I get more than 1800 shots and with the EN-EL18 in the battery grip that number more than doubles again. Starting to feel like the days of the D1x when I needed and external battery pack. May need to hold onto a D850 for star shots with image stacking.

You can run the Z9 off of a USB power bank.

Yes, it's become necessary unfortunately. Even though the subject of this thread is glaringly obvious, or should be.

Currently, there are a couple of "mixed systems" threads discussing camera A vs B etc. Perhaps a general discussion thread comparing systems might help, perhaps... in addition to sections for the main brands.

The ignore function has its limits. Thus fair moderation is still needed. The alternative is the eclipse of a forum, when repeating offenders drive out members, committed to the system they are locked into.

Great Idea to split the forum into sections for Sony, Canon and Nikon, etc.

I haven't done an exact count, but i would say its similar to the D850.......by what i have been seeing. Definitely 740 is ultra conservative in worst full on situations but not remotely real, its dose far higher.
Keeping the D850 is a whole different question, i am keeping mine defiantly as i have a lot of FX glass still.

I love agree about the D850. I am “definitely” keeping my D500 (but ‘defiantly’ also works😁😁) I am enjoying mirrorless (Z6ii) but there is much about the DSLR generation I also want to keep in touch with.

Although I’m interested in how these cameras compare I don’t mind which one is better , the important thing is if they are suited to the job . For me I’m looking at either 600mm f4 GM or Z9 500pf. The Z9 500mm PF would make a nice lightweight birding camera

Just a quick note, please remember to keep it civil in this thread. There's starting to be too much "my camera is better than yours" type threads. I'd hate to lock this thread.

Unfortunately Steve as you know, people will be people, which isn’t logical or rational, much less honest or transparent.

It’d be great if Sony shooters would admit (even though I’d say most on this board have), that Nikon has come out with a solid offering for 5,500 dollars which matches Sony in most features while losing out on a few, yet exceeds some in select areas.

More so though, it’d be great if Nikon shooters (many on this board have not, other than you), would admit that they truly wish the Z9 would’ve appeared with most of its features @ 24 MP for 1,000 dollars less nearly 5 years ago, aka the Sony a9. Instead they’ll repeatedly say they don’t need a PlayStation camera as they aren’t brain-dead and know how to take a proper photo.

I have hope, but reality says otherwise…

from early reports, it sounds like the battery last much longer than the rated number. I don’t have my Z9 yet, but my Z7ii greatly exceeds the number of rated shots per charge. I’m not sure what type of external battery pack you needed for the D1x, but the Z9 can be powered by any USB C PD portable battery power bank. This might be a cheap option if needed.

The CIPA battery score represents a high usage test. It is based on taking repeated shots every 30 seconds, turning the camera on / off every 10 shots...etc. Perhaps only long video sequences get close but I'm not qualified to comment. This is unrealistic of how many of us use a camera, even though it's ancient news that Mirrorless chew more power than DSLRs.

The real world performances of modern camera batteries are impressive, and the quest to improve efficiency appears to be the major reason why Nikon have kept updating the ENEL18* and ENEL15* series over the past decade.

Although, with the thread count increasing on here it still may be more organized to create brand subforms.

I'll do my part to keep the comparisons out of this thread.

I plan to start a new thread to compare Z9, A1, A9(II), R5, D850/D500 and eventually R3 (once I get my test drive from CPS). That thread will be biased towards the fringe fast, erratic, BIF stuff I love to shoot. But I will also discuss the simpler things like shooting perched or floating birds with BEAF and camera ergonomics and button customization/ease of use. With that thread, people who don't want to read comparisons between brands can just skip it. Those interested for whatever reason (gear heads, starting from scratch, etc) can hopefully get something out of it.

I'm sure once Steve puts out his ultimate Z9 review it will also delve into comparisons between A1 and R5 and D6 etc.

Thanks @Steve.. Like many I like to read about gear, even if it is gear I'll never be able to afford. However, what I don't like is the endless brand A vs Brand B arguments that will never be settled on an Internet forum. From what I've read on this topic (91 pages now) is all systems have their pros and cons. Pick the brand or system where the pros line up with your personal photography style/needs the best, go with it and take beautiful photos. All of the cameras made in the past 10 years or so are capable of producing beautiful photographs in the right hands. Let's take some beautiful photos of nature and wildlife and talk about the beauty. Just my two cents worth.
Jeff

I have done around 6000 plus shots on the Z9 since receiving it on the 24th of December, all in JPEG fine, half with 3D half without but a all at 20 fps, with lots of image reviews on the back of the screen, i recharged the battery for the first time at around 1500 shots.

I had the screen on bright, lots of other features on etc, if I went hiking etc i would really shut things down a little more..........

In the field i would NOT be reviewing things every few shots.

On my D850 i assume this D battery will last a hell of a lot longer for obvious reasons.

The only thing is i normally unless in special circumstance, i wouldn't shoot more than 10 to 12 fps compared to 20, and i 98% of the time only ever shoot JPEG fine..i don't know if that makes a difference.

So the First time it looks like 1500 shots, with extravagant use of power.

I assume i will get 1800 plus shots hopefully at some stage subject to the shoot and circumstances but the floor at this stage seems at worst 1500.
