Official Nikon Z9 Launch, Info, and Discussion Thread

I called B&H today twice to get my order changed from 12 month no interest to 24 months. Two different employees "confirmed" that the order they're receiving from Nikon on the 15th will fill all their backorders as of today.
That's very interesting! I'm sure B&H has likely ordered enough Z9's to cover their anticipated preorders, but how many will Nikon actually ship? Sounds like the employees you spoke to have some knowledge as to the number of cameras they will be receiving. I really hope this is the case. I placed an order for a Z9 about 30 minutes after B&H started selling them and have been worried that I won't see the Z9 until February or March.

" The newly design locking mechanism is easier to operate and doesn’t allow overtightening, which caused a failure on the first generation V6 holders....."

Here is an example of the NISI 14-24 filter holder marking the lens

Non issue for me I buy stuff to use it not sell it.

*edit- you could probably take the screw out put it in a drawer and give two wraps of 3m super 88 to lock filter frame in place.
I removed my hood to check, not a scratch anywhere from the screw. Again, you would have to really tighten the thing down to scratch into it.

Did anyone order from B&h or Adorama that can confirm this?

Most of the videos demonstrating BIF seems to have been done by folks with hardly any wildlife/BIF experience, with weird settings or wrong AF modes. Also, shot from a thousand mile away and most of the frames are anyway going to be in focus considering the DoF at such distances. I am really interested in seeing the hit rate on BIF at closer distances where the birds fill or are at least more than 1/2 of the frame.

So far there are just 2 videos below that demonstrate BIF nicely. The one by the camera store tv showing 420 frames of an incoming raptor at 120 FPS and the other one is by Stephan Wiesner.

Very thoughtful and insightful observation. Thank you for posting the videos by Stephan Wiesner and the camera store

Same here as far as why I buy my gear. Photographic equipment usually makes a lousy investment. Then again, I also like to keep my gear in top shape and try to always treat it kindly.

B&H has it listed as "Coming Soon", while Adorama has it listed with an expected in-stock date of December 18. That may leave some with an early Z9 order unhappy for three days, or so.

My camera dealer (Wex in the uk) have a live webinar q&a at the moment with Ricci, it is on you tube
I asked the question about shipping and they have confirmed it will be shipped on the 15th of Dec!!

Of course if you happen to have an original FTZ, you can use that on the Z9. Not ideal for vertical orientation, but will do until you can get the FTZII.

Thanks for sharing this discussion.
Well, many who following this thread and the new flood about Z9 will find Ricci has covered much of the material here (as have other writers etc). Nevertheless, IMHO he confirmed - underscored in fact - many key points. These features included for my planning etc EVF (ie. blackout / adjustable brightness that gets very close to OVF), 2-eyed shooting, Bird AF, IQ of RAW files compared to Z7 and several other top-tier specs - the new 14bit RAW image formats especially.

New information about Angelbird cards, which the company have tested on a Z9. These CFExpr cards can be ordered direct from Austria. Sounds like their AV PRO CFEXPRESS XT are ideal for Z9, especially for stills.

There are also some interesting snippets on lenses eg images out of 100-400 S are judged just better than 500 PF, i.e when cropped. AF performance with FTZ I is excellent for widely used F mount telephotos Ricci has tested... IMHO this confirms absolutely ZERO worries here about adapting AFS glass using a FTZ (again nothing new for those who have relied on FTZ with existing Z cameras).

Above all, it is clear Nikon have designed a cutting edge Pro camera in the Z9. With all the new Z mount and 94+ F AFS Nikkors all the options are almost endless. So many choices get confusing (fiscal reality permitting obviously).
And we wait.... the countdown continues to using this new AF system in the wild.....

Nikon Z9 is DPReviews PRODUCT OF THE YEAR winner.

"Jaded cynics that we are, we don't say 'wow' much at DPReview, but the Z9 is a camera that has impressed all of us. Even before we'd had one in our hands, the Z9's specs seemed like a wishlist, comprised of all the features that a professional photographer might want. We've described the Z9 as the most 'DSLR-like' of any mirrorless camera that we've ever seen, largely thanks to its immersive, black-out free electronic viewfinder, but that doesn't mean that it feels like old technology. While it's DSLR-like in terms of size and weight, the Z9 eclipses the likes of the D5 and D6 when it comes to both features and performance."

Also, Nikon Z9 is runner up for HIGH-END camera (winner Sony A1) but (mainly) for following reason:

"the Z9 is shaping up to be one of – if not the - best high-end ILCs we've ever seen. It's only the fact of its DSLR-like size and weight which just prevent it from taking the top award. "

The eagle sequence is amazing. Any idea what AF mode it was shot with?
