I purchased a 4 bay thunder bay raid drive from OWC and connected it Friday. I put my LRC originals on it and set it up for raid 1. I used it some Friday and yesterday and it worked flawlessly. Well today I installed a Mac OS software upgrade and now the drive isn’t recognized. It doesn’t show up in finder or disk utility. I have checked everything I can think of. I did run a CCC clone into another drive yesterday so I have the originals on another drive. I connected the drive to my MacBook Pro and it shows up in finder and it also has the latest OS software. I’m at a loss

A little more information might help with diagnosing the problem:
- Which version of MacOS?
- Does the MacBook Pro have the same OS version?
- Was the RAID array configured using the Apple Disk Utility or with SoftRAID?

If the volume was created with SoftRAID it may be an extension conflict. Here's a couple of links that might apply:

Both have the same is version Big Sur 11.5.1
A rep at owc advised me to configure using sofraid and not disk utility which seems weird to me. The MacBook doesn’t have the sofraid software. I will check out the info you attached and if it doesn’t work I can call owc later today. I’m so glad I cloned the drive now.I did do some of these steps last night from some articles I found online. Most of what I found was regarding the m1 chips. Hopefully I can get it sorted out soon.

Finally got the drive so I can use it. OWC said it’s an issue with Big Sur software not being compatible. Unfortunately I’m going to have to enter a command in terminal each time I use the drive which is super annoying. They said more than likely it will still be a little while before sofraid sends out the next update for their software to fix this issue. It’s sort of makes me regret going this route now.

If it is not compatible why did it work with the MacBook Pro? It would see to me that if it worked with the MacBook it would work with your desktop. Can you use it on the desktop without using softraid?

I had a problem a few days ago where the softraid system did not work (though the mounted drive did). I contacted Softraid support and they gave a dozen or so termimal commands to completely remove Softraid. I then installed it and everything works great again. Great customer service

That's really odd. When I updated to BigSur, Softriad stopped working but the RAID drive (an OWC thunder bay 6) is still fully operational. I don't have the soft raid accessories, but the drive still functions normally.

Do you have the latest versions of the SoftRAID application and driver? SoftRAID version 6.0.5 of driver and application seem to work fine on MacOS Big Sur 11.5.1.

Yes and I’ve been on the phone twice with owc and they’re telling me there’s been numerous issues since Big Sur’s inception. It’s definitely aggravating to say the least.

Sorry to hear you're still having difficulties.

If you lose patience with SoftRAID you could create a RAID 1 using the Apple Disk tools. Presumably using Apple's utility for the RAID would eliminate any software compatibility issues. Creating a new RAID will destroy all data currently on the disks so you'd have to back up all the data on the current RAID (preferably multiple copies). Once you create the new RAID in Apple Disk tools you'd need to restore all the data to the RAID drive.

It would be time consuming and you lose the disk monitoring features of SoftRAID, but maybe it's a reasonable trade-off for reliable operation. The Apple RAID Assistant is under the file menu in the Apple Disk Utility.

SoftRAID v6.whatever is working perfectly on my inte. iMac with Big Sur. IIRC…v5 Had some issues with BS but 6 is a free upgrade from OWC although you have to go to their site and get a new serial number with your order number.

Had the same problem. When I contacted Softraid support they had me uninstall system (using terminal commands which I cut and pasted) and reinstall the software. Since then, all works as before.

I've already did that early this morning and still the same issues. The iMac is only 3 weeks old now and barely has an other software on it so I'm pretty certain its with the sofraid software.

Sad to say but it’s headed back to Illinois on a ups truck. I took what was the seamless operation and turned it into a arduous task to get on my desktop and edit photos. It’s just so seamless having everything internal to your machine. I’ve had it this way for years. I do multiple time machine back a week, plus drag and drop photos occasionally to an external drive as a copy then do a carbon copy cloner on those as well. This has worked for years with no issues and it’s just not worth the hassle and spending $1000 on a drive that makes the process slower and more complicated on top of that. This is twice that I’ve tried to transition over to an external hard drive and both times has been sort of disastrous. Really, with us just dropping $5000 on a new iMac with 8 times the storage of the MacBook Pro we had it only makes sense in our situation to keep everything internal for quite some time then at that point I will just offload images. It’s so nice to hit the mouse pull up Lightroom classic and be working on a photo in less than 30 seconds literally. Perhaps at some point years down the road I’ll change my mind on the process but for now, there’s just no comparison to having your work internal to your machine.

FWIW, when they work, they are seamless. I seldom give mine a second thought. It's unfortunate you had such a bad experience with it.

FWIW I purchased OWC Thunderblades and dislike the fact they come pre-configured with Softraid. Each time I had to get on the phone with OWC tech support figure out how to properly remove Softraid so I could use MacOS Raid tool. I dislike third party software running at the MacOS kernel....if my system fails, I only want to have to make one phone call and no finger pointing going on.

That is by far one of the hardest software‘s in my 12 to 14 years of using macs that I have ever seen to remove from a machine! I mean it goes in every nook and cranny of the machine which I certainly don’t like, especially when it’s only used a back up photos. I’ll stick to the tried and true cloning of drives which has never let me down.

Same here. I have been running OWC thunderbay systems for over 5 years, perhaps closer to 10 year and only minor hiccups.

I agree. Simple is better. I use multiple drives and clone to them or drag and drop. Very straight forward and easy to problem solve.

I had a similar experience - but luckily I had another full backup older NAS at home...

I’ve said this in many comments elsewhere, but I run a Synology 916+ 4 bay 12Tb disc station that work seamlessly with my 2018 iMac 28” 5k . I upgraded from my much older Synology without any hassle. My Mac does daily backups, plus once a week the DS backs itself to my older DS. I’ve run this on all recent Mac OS including the current public Beta Monterey.
I can’t stress how good the Synology stations are. I can access from anywhere in the world with an internet connection … it’s like my own private cloud station.
