Thank you Steve for sharing your findings with the R5 and 100-500. I too had a very similar experience with the rental I had. The files were amazing and as long as I did my part, they required very little post processing. Just to confirm my findings, I rented the A1 with 200-600 again, and I agree the R5 with the copy of the 100-500 I rented produced amazing images. They were my favorite images I've taken all summer. This may sound silly, but I can't tell you the number of times I've looked at those pictures over and over again that's how much I fell in love with the quality. And to be honest, for me, the 7.1 and the issue with adding a tele weren't ideal but not deal breakers. I also was amazed at how much detail was retained even with excessive cropping. Not something I like to do, but wanted to test out. My issue is with my ability to follow the birds when using the ES 1st curtain over the ES since I have a lot of erratic action that often has vertical lines. All said, if that lens was available today, I would purchase it in a heartbeat!

I hope you, or your wife, will share more thoughts on the R5 with the 100-500. Many thanks to you for all that you do and to Backdoor Arts for sharing his experience and journey moving from the D500 with PFs to the R5 with the 100-500!
We only had the setup for a week, unfortunately. We've been trying to get our own and although an R5 is easy to find, the 100-500 is a unicorn at the moment. Hoping to get one so I can share more thoughts on it :)

In which way? I have watched Jan's videos and what I took away is that he has 2 key issues (for him) with the Sony 200-600, but none related to what Hut mentioned.
His first issue is that he finds 100mm on the wide end more useful than 600mm on the long end - that's highly personal and very dependent on what you shoot (he doesn't shoot a lot of pictures of very small birds but likes environmental portraits of animals so his preference is quite logical).
His second issue is that the Sony has a much higher level of focus breathing, which reduces focal length at short distances therefore significantly cutting into the Sony's 600mm "advantage".

Otherwise, it's really small nuances between the lenses. The canon is lighter but the sony has 1/3rd stop brighter aperture at the long end. They both seem very sharp with maybe an edge for the canon, offset by the fact that the A1 has slightly higher resolution than the R5. Although Sony gets bashed for their color science it's actually the Canon R5 files that are off in Lightroom (for now, I assume an update to LR will eventually fix that) etc...

Don't get me wrong, I am leaning Canon over Sony but it's got nothing to do with the 200-600 vs 100-500 and I doubt it should be a determining factor for anybody. What's exciting though is that new Sigma 150-600 sport for E mount... best of both worlds or worst of both worlds?
Dustin Abbott who probably does the best lens reviews of this type concluded the Sigma is good but the Sony is still better. Sony is a little sharper, focuses faster and gives you the full 30fps vs the Sigma is maxed at 15fps. The hit rate on moving subjects was much higher with the Sony. For $500 more (when Sony is on sale it is only $300 more) I would still buy the Sony again. Add in the shorter zoom ring and internal zoom it is a no brainer to me.

Thanks, I had not seen this review. The 15fps vs 30fps is enough of a killer in my view. Who would buy an A1 or A9ii to have their top frame rate cut by 50% or 25%?

Wonderful! So looking forward to your review! Your advice on the D500 was spot on for me in the past and I'm confident if you recommend the R5 and 100-500 that I won't be disappointed. Best to you and your wife!
