One from last night: a great horned owl leaving its nest to hunt for the night. I had discovered it two weeks ago (at Catalina State Park, Arizona) and saw the direction it flew off at dusk. I lined myself up this time hoping it would go the same way, which it did. My longer telephoto is only f5.6 so I had to use my 70-200 f2.8 and crop in post. I knew I wouldn't be able to track it with autofocus in the low light so I prefocused in manual a few feet in front of the nest and rapid fired as it flew off, hoping it would be in focus in one image, which it was. Image was seriously underexposed as you can see, but I was able to process it to be visible yet keep the feeling of dusk/night.

Black Crowned Night Heron - very early morning. Not everyone's idea of editing - but I dislike messy backgrounds in my own photos. This is not background replacement - just edited with mostly motion blur. Thanks for looking.

Doug, from what I can see you did a good job. I think the trick with GF is to use it a lot to practice, to see how it works, to fine-tune it, and to judge when to use it and when not. I hate messy backgrounds so I practice a lot. :)

I took these white-crowned sparrows this morning and ended up with two sets of two images. On one pair of images, the front bird is looking at me and the rear bird is looking left. On the other pair of images, the front bird is looking left and the rear bird is looking at me. On each pair of images, the camera focused on the front bird on one and the rear bird on the other. To get both in focus and both looking left, I used the one where front bird is in focus facing left as the main image. I used the one where rear bird is in focus and facing left and grabbed its head and body. I did this by layering the two images, making the rear bird image the bottom layer, and erasing just that part from the top layer so the bottom bird shows through. Finishing touches in NIK Color Efex (used in Photoshop Elements).

My last post (#93 above) was one week ago when I wanted to do the dead saguaro by flashlight (torch to non-Americans) but the flashlight I had was too weak. Tonight I went back to the same dead saguaro with a stronger light (actually an LED bike light).
