Praise for Zemlin Hoods

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

After my wife, who has been frustrated by both Canon and Nikon lens hoods, saw a Zemlin hood in action, she said "Finally a well designed hood that works" (or something like that)".

Karl (@zemlin ) you hoods are great.
I wanted easier hoods for a couple of my long lenses but they weren't available.
So I 3D printed a couple of hoods ... 🦘

I have the 500pf. What’s not to like about the hood? That the Zamlin fixed?
The 500 PF lens hood is a little flimsy and can sometimes not go on/off as easily as it should and you have to find and press the button to remove it. The Zemlin hood is an easy twist and turn and off/on it goes as well as being much more robust. Reverse the hood and it is like the original hood for storage.

My hood broke and a replacement from Nikon was out of stock and I was going on a trip. Blessing in disguise, much easier to put on for just a start. Better material, won’t break as easy.
I would not have replaced the hood if my original hadn’t broke but now if an original breaks from any lens, I would order from Zemlin if available rather than the Nikon original replacement.

Oh wow. This is incredible. Thank you for sharing this.

So far my only concern with the 500pf is securing the cover after use. None of the Nikon lens covers are super easy, except the 14-24/2.8 which can only be attached one way…

I ordered the Zamlin cover & smallest hood for the 800pf. If I like the cover and it’s easier to put on and remove, I might get covers for other lenses that could stay after a session without a cover because it takes too long to fiddle with it during a session while changing lenses.
Mainly 24-70/2.8 70-200 & 50/1.2 which are the daily tools in studio.

(BTW
The 50/1.2 is a ridiculously good lens, even at f/5.6. The contrast, the blacks, Everything is so well balanced, it requires half the amount in post compared to any other lens, including the 50/1.8
But that’s for a separate thread, I don’t want to derail this one)

Just saw this on Zemlin's website

ZEMLIN PHOTO WILL BE CLOSED Jan 16-30
All items will show as OUT OF STOCK until I open things back up early on the 30th. Pending orders will not be impacted. I will continue to manufacture and build parts until all orders have shipped.

First, let me say how freakin' awesome it is for one of my customers to start a thread like this, and for others to chime in with kind words about me and my products. It's incredibly rewarding to see all this. I'm just a crusty old fart making parts in my garage - doing the best I can with what I have, but I am uncompromising and committed to delivering good stuff. It's so great to see how much it means to my customers!

Second - regarding the closing. @hrv is right. I just need some time to do things. I'm a one man operation and I can't go 120% 24/7/365. I have a machine making strange noises - it's not impacting the products, but I'm crossing my fingers that it holds out until I get the current backlog of orders shipped. Then I need to dig in and make repairs. My wife is having surgery in a couple weeks she'll be down and out for a bit. Finally, I need to do some work around the house ... so just life things.

If I were 20 years younger, I'd be running with the business - hiring help and seeing where I could take it - but not now. I'm retired from the day job gig not interested in having this outgrow me and my garage.

I'm also a photographer. I shoot for IndyCar and I'm shooting about half the races this season, plus other races and events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I'll shut down sales then too while I'm away and need to get images delivered. It's possible the site will be closed for over a month in April and May - shooting Long Beach, Barber, and the month of May here in Indy. Not sure how I'm going to manage orders during that time.

So I'm grateful that I'm delivering products folks want and that business is strong. ECON 101 says I could slow sales by raising prices. I did that back in May, but I don't want to do it again. I'm comfortable with my current pricing, so I just put up the CLOSED sign when I need to get caught up.

Thank you all!

Hope your wife's surgery goes well, we'll say a prayer. I'm recovering from my surgery at this moment amd taking time off is important for both of you. Hope the repairs and recovery for your machine also goes well. If I were younger (I'm not that old) I apply for a job with you.

@zemlin, as Mark stated above, hope your wife's surgery goes well! I have several of your hoods and lens caps, and I couldn't be happier or more impressed. Very well-built products, and stellar customer service.

Do you ship to MontreL? I want to order a lens cap and hood for my Z600 F/4. I will wait when you reopen again, but before, I want to know if you ship to Montreal. Thank you

I am curious about how the Zemlin hood fits on the 800PF. I have owned 2 other Zemlin hoods... one for an old AFS II 300 f2.8 that I purchased without a hood and one for my 500PF. Before I ask my question, I want to make it clear that I absolutely like the design and options that Karl Zemlin produces. I definitely prefer the Zemlin hood to the 500PF, and I don't like the locking mechanism of the 800PF, so I knew the Zemlin replacement was the product I need/want.

Now for my question... after attaching the bayonet ring to my 800PF, I have fiddled with the tightening screw to make it tight but not too tight. My other two hoods "click" in place when I put them on my other lenses, this is not what I am observing with the hood for the 800PF. It seems that I can twist the hood on, but it does not lock in place w/ solid click. Is this what others are observing with their hoods for the 800PF?

thanks to those who respond,
bruce

It should lock like the others. Try a little more twist on the hood. As the hoods get larger I increase the lock/unlock force required. Since you've installed a couple of rings you're familiar with the process, but make sure the space between the ring and the rubber on the lens is the same all the way around - just to be sure it was properly seated before tightening.

Thanks Karl,
I loosened the ring and tightened it up one more time w/ the suggested gap and it works!

Thanks a lot.
