Praise for Zemlin Hoods

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Rick, i have been considering the 2 piece option, myself for my 800. What would you consider to be the advantages?
There are two off the bat, first being storage. If you store on the lens it is more compact. But I usually keep the lens in my large Vanguard case. I keep both bodies and the 800mm and one or two other lenses in it for local trips. The 2 piece fits perfectly in the space left in the case when collapsed. The second is you have two lens hoods in one; a short one and a longer one. They are easy to snap together or remove one or both together. The only disadvantage I've found is sometimes when you want to remove the hood, you have to consciously think about if you want to remove one or both hoods. If you grab the larger one you can rotate and only get the larger one (the outside one). But that is only a minor issue that has a number of solutions. In any case, I believe you will be very happy you purchased. Both the hood and cap are sturdier and better built than the ones that come with the lens. And, should you break or loose any piece, its way less expensive to replace than those provided with the lens. Hope this helps.

PS: Karl, hope your wife is well. I applaud your dedication to her. While work is a means to an end, family is the most important part of life and should be #1 in our life endeavors. Best to you both.

I got the two-piece version for my 800 mm PF (and the lens cap). Also have the 500 mm PF hood. And have ordered the new hood for the Z 100-400. I like the Zemlin hoods and caps a lot. Recommended.

I got the two piece for my 800 mm PF mainly because it would pack a bit smaller (the smaller piece can nest inside the larger piece) if I were to put it in a duffel or suitcase for travel. Also, in windy conditions, I could use just the smaller hood, if I want/need a hood, and have less hood for the wind to grab. There might also be other cases where a shorter hood is nice (say in my kayak).

I like what I'm seeing in these, kind of wish I could have a two piece for a Nikon 400 f2.8 FL.
The mount for the 400 D and G hoods is identical, so any of the two-hoods listed on those pages will be a perfect fit on the E lens. I ship the same lock ring for all of them. Can’t say I have a good reason for not having those on the E FL page. They use the same caps too, so no concern if you order the hood with a cap.

I want to order a hood and a cap for my Nikon z 600 mm TC. The only problem is I can’t decide between the 147 mm two pieces or one piece w or without the Skid Pad. I feel I am silly to ask anyone can give me advice? Thank

I think addition of the skid is a no brainer, if you ever set it on the ground lens down a good idea. I do that often. Won't hurt being there if you don't set it on the ground that way. As far as two piece, will pack smaller in luggage, and gives more options, especially on a windy day. JMO.

Got the Zemlin hood for my 800pf today, fits like a glove and snaps on and off. I doubt very much this will ever just fall off like the hood that came with the 800pf might. Superb job Karl!

Received the Zemlin Hood and Lens Cap today for my 800 PF. Excellent fit and simple installation. I like the shorter 4.5" Hood and the Nikon supplied Hood has been retired and stored away. Thank you Karl for completing my order in a timely manner.

I recently received the hood and cap for the Z800. I had some difficulty following the instructions and ended up destroying the lock ring. I spoke to Karl and said he was sorry that I experienced a problem and offered to send me a replacement no charge. Awesome customer service!

From what he and I gathered, I did not put on the lock ring in the proper orientation (12 o'clock instead of 9 or 3) so the ring did not seat properly.
Here's my question, will hear a click or otherwise know that the lock ring seated properly when I try to reinstall it.

When it drops over the features on the lens, it sorta' clicks into place - it won't rotate - and the gap at the screw is only about 1/8" with the screw loose. Once you get it, I think you'll know it.

Vern, I screwed up the installation of the lock ring. Please look at my message above and impart any advice you can so I do it correctly next time.

Thanks Karl. I didn't realize you were a member of this group. Thanks so much for taking my calls the other day. I'm looking forward to using the hood soon.

I have a question, when you ordered the hood and cap, did Zemlin notify you when it supposed to be delivered and how long you have to wait for it?
I ordered a hood and a cap for my z 600 mm tc on the 6 th of February, a week ago. I only received e mail to tell me that they received my order and nothing else since. My credit card was charged the same day I made the order
How long did you wait before it was delivered to you? Thank you

Email Karl. He is on the ball answering questions.

Your order has been manufactured and is staged for final fitting and shipping. You'll get the shipping notification either tonight or tomorrow morning. The payment system on my site does not allow me to wait until I ship an order to charge the card. I wish I could do that.

I'm a one-man operation working out of my house - so there is no "they" in Zemlin Photo - it's just lil' ol' me.

Thank you! When I mentioned the paiement is only to say that everything was in order and off course like everywhere, when we order we pay at the same time we put our order. My question was only to have an idea about the waiting time.
Sorry for asking

Sorry to read you had problems with mounting the Locking Ring. I read the instructions twice maybe three times lol…. and watched the Video on Karls website and installed the Locking Ring at the 3 O’clock position. At the 3 O’clock position the Ring fits flush with the end of the Lens. Yes, mounting the Camera on a Tripod helps. Good to also read Karl helped you resolve the problem. Valued in these times is Excellent Customer Service.

Received my cap and hood yesterday! Install was fairly straightforward, and once locked into place, it’s extremely solid. The products ooze quality, especially the cap, it’s is very dense and hefty, “bombproof” as they might say.

I ordered the shorter 3.23” variant for my 800, and it greatly improves the maneuverability, and makes the lens feel a little bit more svelte. Think I might eventually get another in the standard size, for “just in case” purposes.

Question: if I wanted to order another hood size for my lens, since I already have the ring, would it be possible to get just the hood?
