Has anybody dug into the new neural filters in Photoshop, especially the betas? There is one that looks promising called death aware haze which allows to add haze, warmth and light in the parts of the picture that are not in focus. Considering this is still a beta, I found it quite encouraging, and since the output is a new layer you can always paint "off" the effect where it got a little overzealous (I had to remove the effect from the beak of the bird and some of the red plumage) .
I probably toned down the effect a bit too much and was a bit heavy handed on the warming up but this looks like a tool that eventually might save a lot of time to soften backgrounds.
They also seem to be working on a more advanced noise reduction algorithm but that's not available yet.
