Retired Prop

This is one of the original turbine props from the hydroelectric powerhouse at the Bonneville Dam on the Oregon side of the Columbia River; the turbines on the OR side have been upgraded. Powerhouse Number Two is on the Washington side. I visited both a couple of weeks ago. There is nothing in the pic to give a proper perspective of the size of this prop. Someone asked me how this prop compares to a prop on a U S Navy super carrier; not sure but each prop is designed for different functions. If I remember correctly, this turbine prop rotated at around 75 rpm.

Carrier screws are low 20s feet in diameter as I recall and these days generally have more scimitar shaped blades like submarines do since they make less noise…although I’m not sure that noisy screws is something they worry about…submarines do. Almost always an odd number of blades as well.

When I take a shot of something like this…I always have my bride stand in the photo and do her Vanna White impersonation.

Some data on the old and replacement turbine......................
