Hi. Just checking to see if anyone has been to Bosque del Apache in the last two weeks. What changes in the watering there might be, i.e., is the pond finished at the road right outside the gate (they said they would be working on it this fall), and have any new ponds been added or changed? What is the sandhill crane population? I mostly go for the cranes as I can get lots of ducks and geese much nearer my home in California (a two-hour drive). I'm heading there tomorrow for three days of shooting. Most photo groups head there the first week of December and some on the second week so hoping I might miss most of that crowd. Let me know if you have any news. Thanks.

The main negative I've heard about are the corn fields, there was no corn planted! That will (or may) keep the numbers down! Hope it is decent for ou which I'm sure it will be but seems like much less activity this year, so far anyway!

Thanks for replying. That may affect the stopover of the cranes for sure.

It could be that this person didn't look at ALL the cornfields so keep that in mind! Keep us posted!! Thank you!
Yes, that could be true. I'll report back in a week or so. It takes me two days on either side of the visit to get there. I like driving because I can bring everything I want and I'm a road-trip kind of person.

I will be rolling in on December 12. Interested in any info from those who will be there before that. I do know the pond off the highway to the west as you enter the refuge is filled this year, so that's good news.

I will be their Wed, Dec 13 through Friday Dec 16. Let me know what's happening.

I will be back in a week and will post whatever I find out. Glad to hear the pond is filled!

Where are you staying? I am at the Comfort Inn and Suits in Socorro. Check in Tuesday 12/13.

Maybe not helpful as I know Bosque has many things going for it but for what it's worth, cranes wise there are thousands already at Merced NWR.

Just got back from my first trip to Bosque, so I don't know what changed compared to previous years, but the pond outside the gate has water and there were plenty of cranes flying in around sunset to spend the night in that pond (the geese were there during the day). There were a ton of cranes in the fields at the Ladd S Gordon waterfowl complex north of Socorro during the day.

Writing from Socorro Best Western as my images download. I was using the Z9 on 15fps with a heavy finger, a lot of images. Bosque is so devoid of birds that there was a "bear" jam (it's a Yellowstone term) yesterday over a fluffy hawk on a log! A handful of cranes scattered about here and there. Someone said that corn was planted in the park but not in public areas. Any feed that might have been around was cut and removed, or so it seemed. I did see, around 2:30 this afternoon (Wednesday) two coyotes hunting, way too far away for a shot, and a small group of female mule deer far out in a field, neither was a shot for me but I was encouraged to see wildlife there. As I was heading out of the park there was a good number of Rosses geese landing in the pond outside the park so I'll head there tomorrow morning for the fly off. On the good side, Ladd Gordon has all of the sandhill cranes in the area, numbering in the thousands I think, no way to count! I go mainly for the sandhill cranes so I was happy to find them there and I'll spend the majority of my time there. Really nice in-flight shots, both morning and evening. So, there are birds in the area, just not much at Bosque right now. The sandhill crane festival starts tomorrow, they did it later this year because of the lack of cranes but there are still no cranes there, bad planning on my part as far as timing, but it does not seem to be mainly about photography so I'm hoping it does not impact the area too much; I"ll just have to beat the busload going out tomorrow morning for the fly off! The brochure said everything takes place at Bosque and I'm hoping they don't head over to Ladd Gordon. That's the report from Socorro.

Thanks for the Ladd Gordon tip.

Just back. A number of minor changes (had not been there for 5+ years) but the only major negative was the lack of corn on the farm (north loop). As Viathelans said, between morning and afternoon, pickings are sllim. Some good opportunities at the Widgeon pond and in Bernadino

What about fly in and fly out, evening and morning? That's always been the most productive time for me at Bosque. Many cranes overnighting?

I will be there Dec 5th through the 9th. Probably to long considering..First time since Jan 2020, that time I managed to catch COVID from all the international travelers at the time.
