Shiprock in the Sky

Fun. We were wandering in the dessert a few weeks ago and I finally saw Shiprock for the first time. Beautiful, a bit surreal place. Certainly worth the 11 on the fairytale slider.

Great picture. Rekindles the memory of climbing Shiprock many years ago and rappelling the shear vertical west side in the setting sun.
Thanks, John, and glad you made it safely, and have fond memories of the experience. I don't think climbing is allowed any longer - we were hesitant to go very far into the land as we knew it was a sacred place. Cheers!

Thank you Mr. Tape! Glad you got to see it - amazing place, and definitely surreal/magical imo. Imma (tm) that slider I think! haha

Btw, I think I broke Flickr today with this image - they are def having server problems... If you get errors, try again later. I see that AWS is having issues, and they might be hosted there (IMDB is e.g.).

...Dave...

Yes. I think Shiprock consists of the remnants of the bird that brought the ancestors to their homeland in the Four Corners area.
Yes, thanks John, I had put that in my description over on Flickr, but I don't know the full origin story there. I tend to put more info/backstory over there, and then link to it rather than putting up the reams of (boring? :) text I sometimes write here (and other places). Downside is viewers have to click through; Upside is higher res for viewers + more presentation control to see it as I intended (fb is particularly notorious for altering images - seems to always crops my work).

btw, thanks everyone for your comments/likes/etc.! This image did quite well over in Flickrworld - my best so far!

Don't you love the light that falls on Shiprock! We were there in the fall of 2016 and stopped before sunset just so we could watch the last rays hit Shiprock. It made the trek to Toadlena that much more incredible.
