So I've noticed this as well, I get a bit of a funky vision after a while, as in, strain and slightly watery eyes, if I keep one eye closed. Both eyes open. To me it’s lower strain and I can see a bit with the other eye and sometimes pick up on activity that’s not yet in the viewfinder.
However with both open it's pretty nice - so it's true about strain keeping one eye closed?
For anyone reading this, shooting vertically with both eyes open is a total game changer. Provided you have both eyes looking straight, you just need to move the camera to your subject and it'll be pretty much in the viewfinder. This is probably something most wildlife photographers know, but it's saved me so much time hunting for the subject in frame, especially with a telephoto.
