Sky Fire

I took this near the entrance of Badlands SD. The sun was setting and my wife and I managed to get a vantage point higher than anyone else allowing me to get this shot. I wasn't planning for this shot but the sunset was vibrant and there was smoke in the air from forest fires. With my 70-300 attached I just started firing away as the sun was setting fast. Over the past year and I half I've taken quite a few photos but this is one of my personal favorites and it was the first time I felt compelled to get a photo printed. There is a lot of orange but I'm not kidding when I say this is exactly what the sky looked like.

I would print it also if it was my image. The shadow detail with the bright streak of dust towards the bottom make the image. Great job!

Thanks! I'll have it printed larger one day, metal might even be cool. Like I said I have personal photos I like but this was the first one that really motivated me to do a print; I find it soothing to look at. I think it's the bright yet smooth dust streak and I'm sure the orange glow has a warming affect. I wish all of my photos could turn out like this :)

If you can find it, try Hahnemühle Fine Art Photo Rag Metallic Paper. I use that for my final prints and it is beautiful. Just enough metallic to make it pop, but not overwhelming.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'll definitely keep this grade of paper in mind when I print. Do you print at home or do you request this paper to be used at a printer?

Wow, technically (the colour gradients! -- if that's what it's called) and artistically this is one mighty fine photograph, indeed. Beautiful. Nice work!
Very beautiful! Awesome colour as you saw it!

Thank you both!

Very nice. Which entrance was this near? That area of SD (SW corner) has so much photgraphic potential!

I still have the "Wall Drug Free Water" bumper sticker that I bought there nearly thirty years ago. I'd love to take a sabattical and visit the Dakotas for a photography tour.

Beautiful image! For me, the backlit dust or smoke makes the image. It draws the eye into the detail.

I was there a few years ago during a period of forest fires. At that time of day the sun was just a dark orange circle, and as it dropped it disappeared completely before reaching the horizon.

I have a print company that does outstanding work both printing and custom framing about 15 minutes from my house. They are in Atlanta but ship world-wide. I don't know if I can mention their name openly in the forum, but I would be happy to PM you with the information and my contact person.

Thanks! It was at the North entrance directly south of Wall. My wife and I were camping in boondocking area along the ridge before the entrance to the Badlands. It was a pretty area for sure and we had a great time. I even got a picture of a bison scratching itself on the speed limit sign at the entrance. That large animal bent it over with ease.

We also spent some time in the Black Hills near Sturgis and Deadwood and we loved that area; I'm looking forward to going back there. Sturgis is actually where I found a shop that printed this photo for me. It looked great printed but I learned that I was editing photos with my screen to bright so it printed out a bit dark. I learned that I can use my camera's metering to set my screen to the proper brightness so hopefully I don't make the same mistake twice.

Thank you! Yeah, the dust really makes the image. I had about 15-20 images of this scene but this is the one that really stuck out to me as I scanned through them. The smoke really makes the sky supersaturated with orange. Like I said in my first post I actually de-saturated the RAW file because I thought it was a bit much. I usually never have to de-saturate a RAW file unless it's a particular look I'm going for.

Thank you, I would appreciate it if you could PM the information.

I love this image!
I'm glad you love it :)
