Thanks Cas1234! The tanager caught me by surprise as well. I have a large local park near my home, and there is actually a bird feeder set up right next to the parking lot. So it allows a photographer to get shots of a lot of different birds, but in a natural setting near the feeder as opposed to on the feeder. The tanager came in quick and left right away. I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time.

Was doing some work this afternoon when I heard a racket and looked out to see the yard swarmed with several hundred Gray-Crowned Rosy Finches. I see them all the time up in the high peaks but have never seen one in the yard before and suddenly they were everywhere. Managed to get a few shots that weren't total chaos:

Went up to high Sierras last week. Snow is dismal spotty at best over Monitor Pass at 9000 ft! Going to be dry. Few birds yet except these guys, Mountain Bluebirds bickering midair and Cassin Finch in the leafless Aspens

The big flock of Gray Crowned Rosy Finches have been hanging around all week and I've started noticing more Black Rosy Finches like this one mixed in with crowd:

Yeah, they have a limited range, mostly in the mountain states plus Nevada and a bit of California. I see them up high in the Tetons all summer dispersed and usually up around 10,000 to 12,000 feet up in the high peaks but until last week I never saw them in big flocks down in the valley much less visiting our feeders. The Gray Crowned have a much wider range but the Black Rosy Finches have a pretty limited range according to the field guides.
