Deep inside I was agreeing with you. Apart from the extra 500g with the 200-600 lens I don’t foresee buying other Sony lenses as for my photography the Z50 kit lenses and a couple of other Nikon lenses will see me right. From a few reviews it seems the 100-400 with the tc gives a bit better flexibility maybe. Also just saw an add for the Sony a9 for the same price as the a7r iv. Maybe a better option. In Australia they expect the 7 iv late November. Maybe I should be patient. Not a natural trait I’m afraid 😳

I have used the Sony A9i. Its dynamic range is not very good. It has an AA filter which softens the details of the feathers. I would not recommend it, unless you shoot in good light most of the time. (I think one gets good light in Australia mostly with very little micro air pollutants...)

Use a monopod if you find the 200-600 heavy.

I tend to be a fair weather photographer. South East Queensland is very kind weather wise. With a wet summer it’s a bit ordinary when it’s humid. I have a monopod but haven’t mastered it yet. Wednesday is my photography day so I will give it a try. I am also in training with a 2 litre plastic milk container with 2.1kg of stones in it. 🏋️

If birds were my subject, especially BIF, I’d choose the A9 over the A7iv without hesitation. You will lose some MP and specific bird eye AF, but the tracking will likely be better and the AF acquisition and frame rate should be a lot quicker. To me, the A7iv looks to be a decent general use camera and good for landscapes like the Z6/Z7. It would work for bif but isn’t going to be as good as an action camera like the A9. The R6 is a much faster camera as well and I’d also chose that over the A7iv for birds.

I haven't shot the a7riv, but I have owned the a9ii and a1 and did extensive study on the a9ii and a7riv before purchasing the a9ii. For base ISO dynamic range, the a7riv and a7iv will be better than the a9ii. However, at the ISOs I typically shot at for other than landscape, the difference is negligible. I also used my a9ii for landscape and found it to be quite effective. To the decision at hand: I'd go for the a7iv over the a7riv as I think the advantages of the new processor are significant on AF performance and I think the 33mp resolution will work well and provide better high ISO performance than the a7riv. To the frame rate, at the ISOs it takes to obtain high shutter speeds with the 100-400 or 200-600, the camera doesn't have the dynamic range to fully exploit 14 bit so the lossy compression works well enough (many of the accomplished bird photographers I follow and have spoken to utilize the lossy raw in order to maximize framerate; look for a1 users who talk about 30fps which also requires lossy raw). For this reason, I'd be shooting 10fps mechanical on the a7iv (and a7riv as well).
