I went to the Dam and shot a ton of Eagles fishing. Used the Sony A92 and 200-600 with and without a 1.4 tc. Am I expecting too much? The settings are Af-c, Zone af, on release, electronic shutter Shutter speeds were 3200 and 4000, every one of these images had the green squares dancing on the bird, but at home then seem less sharp that they should, mostly cropped but not more than 30%, the juvi is straight fro the camera. I can run them thru AI Denise and they are better but shouldn't they be better now? Thoughts? THANKS

Possible camera shake, not knowing what your shutter speeds were. Most likely atmospherics. Anytime there is a difference between water/land temps and air temps especially when the water/land is warmer as is common this time of year you get heat waves rising. They effect is worse with longer distances to subject.

Was stabilization activated?

The exposure settings should have been okay. A teleconverter on that lens is borderline but should work.

Were you using a cable release or some approach other than long lens technique? A hand on the lens barrel can be helpful in damping vibration.

I'd do some testing of a static target with similar detail and exposure settings. You need to confirm you and your gear can produce a sharp image at those settings, then introduce AF and motion to the testing.

Nice captures! I can imagine though that you're a tad disappointed with the sharpness. At those shutter speeds it shouldn't be motion blur, or camera shake, but atmospheric conditions could easily soften the images. (Stabilisation might; worth trying without.) They're still very nice, though.

Thanks for the reply. I did testing on static subjects and the combo is sharp. I think i was stabilized and setting 1 on the lens. I was using Zone and sometimes zone will jump to the water as the eagle dives and I miss focus. I am headed back and will try it stabilized and non stabilized. Appreciate the time . I ran them thru Ne noise and they do clean up a little.

Set the len to 3 for erratic subject. Also for zone mode set to 1 for lock on. See if that helps
