Stiff tripod collar

I have a Nikon 500 f4 G that has a tripod collar that is a bit stiff. Even with the knot loosened all the way the lens/camera do not rotate easily or freely. Does anyone know if a little lube carefully placed will cause any harm? Maybe silicone based? Thank you for any suggestions

Instead of wet lube I would be tempted to try something dry like graphite powder. Make sure to keep it away from switches, moving parts of the lens and of course the lens elements. Let's see first what others think of this idea.
