Sub-selector issues

I've been using the Z9 since late December and gradually getting to know the camera; however, one issue I'm having is with back button auto-focus (BBAF is used here for short). DSLR's have an ON/OFF switch to lock the focus point. Z cameras do not. I haven't figured out a way to avoid moving focus points on the sub-selector which is right next door to the AF/ON button. So often when I raise the camera to shoot the AF point is in the bottom corner of the screen. It appears the camera is better-suited to shutter-button focusers but after 30 years of using BBAF the muscle memory that directs my thumb to the AF/ON button is hard to change.

Here's what I've tried to remedy this. I've tried to assign the Shooting Control Sub-selector function button to "None" and this doesn't work. It still moves the focus point. I've used Control Lock (Control>F4) to lock the AF point. This works but whenever I accidentally touch the button (which is almost every time) a "Focus Point Locked" message blacks out the screen so I have to press the sub-selector again to get rid of the message. I'm wondering out loud if there's a way to avoid that message?

We've just come out of a cold snap here so the problem was worse when using gloves for the past month or so.

I know there are lots of photographers here who are using the Z9 and there must be some who use back-button focus so I'm wondering what works for you?

Thanks for your reply. I have done the same. I just wish I didn't need to and would like to be able to disable the joy stick (sub-selector) to avoid touching it with my thumb..
