A follow up on my previous endorsement, above, for TC14 III but only with certain lenses. Given the high RRP it pays off to be patient and find a Used TC14 III at a decent price.
Earlier this year I bought a second unit Used, as I have gravitated to the 70-200 f2.8E with one TC14 III as standard, and the 2nd copy on the 400mm f2.8E. These work between a D850 and D5. On an interesting note, I could not detect any differences between the two rechecking fine-tuning of the focus.
With both these Nikkors, f4 is fairly fast with decent bokeh rendering, but one has the flexibility to get either lens back to f2.8, and wider framing. With smaller birds the TC2 III is often essential to get the 400 out to 800 f5.6, but I don't like TC2 on the zoom.
This strategy is being vindicated while I'm enjoying a few weeks in the Limpopo lowveld outside Hoedspruit with regular hikes.... and trips into Kruger NP. Both TC14's have been vindicated soundly. I also keep a TC14 handy with the 500 PF on longer hikes. This combo can be vital for fleeting encounters....
