Test with new TC 14E III and 300 mm PF on D500

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Today I finally received my new TC 14E and made some quick test shots comparing with and without the TC and making crops to the same scale to compare. I set the camera to M 5.6 and 1/1250, auto iso only differs minimally around 1100/1200. My raised garden bed is about 30 m away. I really cannot see much difference in sharpness in the crops. Does that mean I get similar sharpness but higher resolution and if I want to make larger prints, I would only then see differences?

Best,

Mike

Mike,
Did you order your tc 1.4 lll from an independent dealer or from one of the NY dealer like B&H?

Hi Ralf, I live in Austria in Europe and got mine from a dealer in Vienna, but I’m afraid that might not be of too much help for you, sorry.

Thanks Mike. I may try a dealer near me where I purchased my 500pf. Local dealers seem to have better luck when supplies are low.

This was my first BIF shot from my gear - it

was before I calibrated the body/lens/TC just a humble gull, its cropped a bit.

You'll get more pixels and similar sharpness with the TC.
I agree Steve - your work on checking the IQ from this setup is spot on, I always turn to your knowledge over this.
The issue here is that is not a very detailed target. If you have something with really fine detail (like a bird's feather) and try it again, that should show you a difference.

I swapped out my 200-500 for a 300 PF and a 1.4 TC iii over a year ago. And around 6 months ago I added a 2.0 TC iii just to try it. I found my keeper rate increased with the TC 2.0. Now it is my go to setup and the 1.4 generally sits in the bag. Only downside is in lower light situations.

@Richard Stern - Way the heck back when the TC14II was released, I got it. Still own it. I also bought the 14III at release, can't see much if any difference. I was told the PF lenses needed the iii to meter correctly, but...
Anyway I own and use both and see no difference on 500PF and other f4 lenses, I don't own the 300.

I just purchased a Nikon 300mm PF and for three months now I’ve been looking for the TC 14 III and even on Nikons Web site they are on back order. Looking to buy used if the price is right... while waiting on Nikon Dealers waiting lists.
I had to grab my TCiii at “the wrong price” last spring but it was pristine and life’s too short to worry about $100. They really are hard to come by so used ones go for serious premiums. My biggest concern at the time is that Nikon will never produce more... so I decided to grab one when I still could and the premiums were not too crazy. It’s a gamble, they might do one last production run but who knows when, or they might not.

it looks like prices on eBay have gone up another $100 from when I bought mine - now mint used ones go for $200 above the “new” price when last available. And new in box is almost 2X initial prices... Even if Nikon makes on last batch, I wouldn’t be surprised if they reprice it at $500 or more.

Hi Mike. Do you mind if I ask which dealer in Vienna. This teleconverter is like gold dust. Impossible to find anywhere!
Trying to find a new TC14E III actually is like trying to find “Fairy Dust” I can find Gold Dust and buy it as well. My search continues and for notification that the back order has been filled.
