I don't like squirrels much because they're always trying to raid my bird feeder in the backyard, and they cause damage to the feeder. On the other hand I don't mind them in the wild where they don't bother anyone's feeders.

Today I took a quick drive to a farming area about 7 km from my home. I regularly find wild turkeys and hawks there, and just last week I found a beautiful specimen of a coyote there as well. I found a hawk but is was skittish and took off the minute the car came near.

Slowly driving down the paved, dead-end road with my driver's side window open I heard this squeaky little voice calling me to stop the car. There was this little red squirrel with some kind of nut in its mouth sitting in a dead tree, and it seemed as happy as can be. It sat there with the nut and allowed me to take a number of pictures.

This shot made the excursion worth it for me.

Nice looking portrait of a squirrel . I have yet to find a way to keep them off my feeders. Has six of them out there yesterday gorging on my seeds. Then again, squirrels gotta eat too.

Nice photo. I wish the only issue I had with squirrels was damage to my bird feeders. The ones around here chew up everything. They chew on my house, lawn and porch furniture, car trim and whatever else they can get to. Every now and then, we see a decline in the squirrel population, which typically means a predator, or predators, have visited the area. (Earlier this week, when on my way to work, I had three bobcats cross the road in front of my car. It happened so quickly, but I got a good enough look at them to ascertain they were bobcats.)

It's because of my dislike for them that I don't usually bother taking pictures of them. This one today was a better than usual opportunity, though. Having taken this picture doesn't make me like them more. 🙁

Nice pose! I find that when I'm trying to be quiet one of these guys always sounds their alarm making the entire forest aware of my presence.

Thanks, Forest. There's a bird in Africa called the Go-Away Bird that always raises the alarm when a human or major predator enters the area. Hunters dislike them for the way they alert the game and ruin the hunt. This guy started making a noise as I slowly approached with the car. Perhaps it was the same thing?

Firstly Rassie what a lovely shot of Squirrel in the wild.
I know squirrels can cause damage to bird feeders but where I live people regularly thieve the feeders from a set up feeding station .

Thanks, Robin.
Amazing that some folks can steep so low as to steal feeders. :(
