The Z8 is getting real warm

As noted in another reply, I didn't discover that it allowed a full-format of CFe but not XQD until this morning as I'd not tried to format a CFe card in it until this morning when someone mentioned that their Z8 showed that option. Very odd that Nikon doesn't allow full-format on SD or XQD. Could be due to the slower write rates on those cards compared to many of the CFe's. Format speed is directly tied to the read/write rate to the card when doing a full-format. Try doing a full-format of 1 or 2TB CFe card on a slow USB port! :)
there's something fishy about their full format tho. as far as i can tell the in camera full format on the cfe-b card is fast enough that i don't think they touch all the card.

but if they don't touch everything, it's unclear what exactly they ARE doing and how it's different than the quick format.

it's possible they may leverage some sort of reset feature that is present in cfe-b and then do a quick format on top of that. if this were the case, then it might explain why it's not available on sd and xqd.

unfortunately, they rarely give details about what's going on under the covers

edit: i'm pretty convinced at this point that the nikon full format probably issues an nvme secure erase command to the cfe controller which erases the contents, then they probably do a quick format on top. bread crumbs about how secure erase works: https://superuser.com/questions/1530363/how-to-securely-erase-an-nvme-ssd

I got a call from a friend about a bigger fire in my area. It was construction material at a construction site, no one got hurt.

Took the Z8 with the 85/1.2 because it was getting dark.
I shot pictures of the fire, fire fighters doing their work, bystanders, and everything interesting that could make it into the local magazine. (They want those pictures asap, even before the fire broke out… lol. dealing with magazine editors…)

After about 45 minutes I decided there is nothing more to cover and walked home. On the walk home I had fun with the 85/1.2, the amount of light this lens can gather, is almost like I see it with my human eye.

The camera wasn’t warm, the battery wasn’t warm either, the battery was a spare Z7ii battery (Nikon original)
The Delkin card was - As my wife described, just finger warm. Which I think is normal.

I didn’t shoot high FPS. I chose the single point in AF-C and touched the LCD where I wanted the focus. At f/1.2 I had to be precise. I find it easier and quicker vs. floating the joy stick around.

If I leave my Delkin card in my Delkin Card Reader after downloading images, the card and reader get distinctly warm.

This might have something to do with your set-up problem
Same here. In fact, even without a card loaded in it, the Delkin reader gets warmer than I expect it to. I now disconnect it from the computer when I'm done uploading my files.

Interesting.. Is this the reader that also has the sd slot on the side?

I have 2 of those. In my laptop either will get hot to the touch, but in my PC only slight warm

Finally got my Z8. I spent over an hour sitting in an air conditioned room just setting up from scratch. The body got real warm - uncomfortable. I pulled the new Delkin Black I got on B&H sale, it was even hotter! Just setting up, no shooting. This is weird.
I am certain it will all work out, Steve and others who had the pre production models for a while didn't seem to have issues ? cant say if they all did much video or not either.

Members in the club are happy as no heating issues whats so ever........if that helps.

I am certain its not the case with your cards, but in general, I am always cautious with cards on sale based on feed back from club members, some who got caught with quality variations on cards be they SD to XQD to even CF express.

Hope it works out for you.

For myself, I really feel the Z8 like any new piece of gear needs to be in the filed for a little while before jumping in.

Only an opinion

I've been living in setup land for a few days with my Z8, sessions last 1-2 hours (then my brain gets fuzzy lol). I'm generally in 75-80º ambient temps (not sitting in direct sun of course). Z8 gets maybe slightly warmer (not hot) than my Z6II? Mostly on the left side, not near the card (I have two cards in, both ProGrade Cobalt). But nothing whatsoever that would cause me any concern.

I'm already getting shots with the Z8 that wouldn't be possible with my Z6II (and I love the Z6II). It's such a level-up for me. Only dilemma is deciding whether or not to keep the battery grip.

I was out shooting with the Z8 yesterday. Outside temps were mid 80’s. Total of 975 frames shot over 1.5 to 2 hours. Card was an XQD 128 GB Sony. No video. Received a Hot Card Warning on my screen. Was surprised by that. Didn’t think that I was pushing the camera that hard. Limited burst speed to 10 fps.

Over my Z6, it is an incredible camera for BIF. It has exceeded my expectations. But the HCW Message certainly concerns me.

Fasten your seat belts........I think more feed back will slowly surface from the coal face over time.

Its hard for someone to drive a high powered turbo charged engine at great speed if the radiator has been reduced significantly in size and or capacity. (only an assumption)

I mean if the Z9 has reasonable limits in warm conditions than how is the Z8 going to deal with the same conditions.

Is the Z8 a winter camera ?

I just hope this doesn't become another Cluster stuff up.........i mean its a really good camera and strategy.

It may become apparent that the SD card has a hidden benefit, it slows the camera down to be more in line with its real cooling capacity limit.

Focus issues with mirror less, heat issues with mirror less, gee says a lot of the D850 D6 D5 D4s all for video and automatic 3 D video tracking........!!!!
