Looking for opinions. This is the edited version of an image taken at 3pm in about the worst harsh light possible. Is this a worthy save, or simply too fake? I know it is all subjective. But be honest I am really just looking for a wide range of perspectives. Suggestions for improvement greatfully accepted. Anyone that knows how to soften the edge of the really hard triangular shadow that under the wing without losing detail and looking muddy would be super helpful.

I'd say it's definitely worth some effort and I like what you've done with it though I think Alan's edits are on the right track. I'd also agree with John above, it's hard to say whether that's the best way to recover the shot without seeing the starting point.

I'd lose a little space at the top / bottom, but dang, that's a cool take on the original. I think it only looks fake to you since you know what the first version was :)

I like it as well! I agree with Steve . Just crop out some of the empty space.👍👍👍

Thank you, everyone. Yes, I do think the image is more powerful with less top and bottom, which is what my FB and Instagram posts of the image would be. Also, aolander appears to have had better luck than me with the Lightroom tools. I didn't take much time yet, but was getting muddy results. Maybe photoshop will treat me better when I get back to this image.

I agree with the post above relating to too much empty space, which can be easliy remedied. Based upon the original, I'd say "Ya done real good!" with the post-processing of the image.

If I could "rescue" my mid day, harsh light images like you have done, I would shoot all day long. Your edited shot gives a very mysterious vibe to the owl. Well done! Certainly some of the other suggestions that have been given are worth considering and possibly tweeking your original, but considering what you started with I consider that spectacular.

OP please let me know if you do not want me editing this I am just learning these things.
Would this be TOO CROPPED?

I just installed the ipad Adobe Photoshop for the first time with no clue how to use it yet to try and see what I could do. I was not aware of the different preset formats but I will learn.

Waaoooo thats simply Fantastic , what a difference between the original and the edited version ..

aolanders Edited image is great I would have no hesitation in popping that in a nice 5x7 Frame .

AstroEd`s Edited image is good too but just a bit to cropped in for my liking , still it certainly shows what can be done with an image that at first was deemed to be ""not a great image"" ...

Well done for putting you work out there for other folks to tinker with it`s definitely opened my eyes to what is possible when it comes to Post Processing...

As everyone has said you have created a great image out of a not so great one. One thing I see in the edited version is that the stick disapppearing into the dark looks a bit odd. I wonder if it could be made to look as though it more gently disappears, ie make it fade away a little above and below the owl?

Thank you all for the comments. Great feedback. I agree @JSD, I had that thought as well about the stick when I revisited the image a few days ago.
