Malcolm, absolutely great photo! We’re headed to South Rim Grand Canyon in a couple of weeks, hoping to catch my first storm pictures. I’m sure I won’t be able to catch one like yours, but I’ll try! Marvelous capture. Bill

Thank you. The light in the cloud is from the setting sun as opposed to from lightning within the cloud.

Hello Bill. Thrilled you're headed to the Grand Canyon. I hear from friends and family in AZ that the monsoon has been pretty good so far so hope it continues while you're there. In late August 2019, there were a significant number of California Condors soaring & roosting along the South Rim in front of El Tovar. Check with the Rangers. Looking forward all you have to share.

That is a great image. Although I realise the whole point is the storm aspect, the lightning strikes are almost an intrusion into the beauty of the rest of the image. Lovely stuff..

I know what you're saying, John. Sunset on the towering cloud formation was my focus while shooting, only to discover the lightning strikes while processing.

This was shot a couple of years ago during a summer of sporadic monsoons. I left Arizona a year ago and this summer, storms have been a nightly occurrence. Of course.

Loved the shot. I''ve not taken lightening shots and had a question about the camera settings: I noticed that your f stop was 36. Was that a typo? Was the intended f stop small to allow you to keep the shutter open longer? In any event your timing was impeccable to catch that strike within 1/4 sec.

Thank you. You are exactly right about the aperture and the reasoning. Attribute it more to luck than impeccable timing. There was still a lot of changing light from the setting sun going on and trying to not blowout the highlights on the cloud. So I took numerous shots and the lightning did not catch my eye - until post processing - there it was.
I have several other lightning posts in this forum shot manually (Thunderstorm - Greeley, CO & Thunderhead on the Prairie). My "Stove Prairie Lightning" is my first and only shot using a lightning detector. Still getting familiar with MIOPS so can't say if it would have detected the Salt River shot.
