Years ago, I had Topaz Denoise when I was shooting with a Nikon D3s. As I moved on to D850, D5 etc I just let it go. Does anyone use it here currently? Is it worthwhile?
Someone used it on an image I posted on another big website, and it seemed good, but another poster said the image was fine without it!
I would value input from BCGalleries users please.

Hi Iain.
I got it about a year ago & think it's worth it.
I don't put every image through it as not all of them need it, but do find if used properly & in the right circumstances it can make a difference.
I haven't downloaded the latest version as yet as I've heard a few people have had issues with it so will wait until they're ironed out.

Very good as plug in in LR. It improves most images taken with my D500 for example, and for any serious keeper of ISO 2000 + The latest version is optimised for Mac Silicon of that matters to you - very fast on such machines. I used to find it frustratingly slow with an older 2015 MacBook. Generally the results are excellent - so much cleaner and much better than Lightroom NR. Topaz will hound you about SharpenAI and Giga as well as updates for Denoise - but they can be relatively easily ignored. Sharpen AI is also good but DeNoise is their best product ie good results and highest numbers of images that will benefit. I use it much less on full frame though (Z7ii)

It's a really good product. However, 3.4.1 (newest version on Mac) is really buggy. Hope they come up with an update soon. It crashes and has to be reloaded. I've seen reports of this behavior in several other forums. Overall, though, I get a lot of use out of DeNoise.

guys and gals, here is an email I got from Topaz support regarding the crashing issue with the 3.4.1 version. Thought I'd share it.

Hi and thanks for reaching out,

We are investigating reports of similar behavior. While we don't know why it's happening at the moment, the following steps should rectify the issue for most users:

1) Go to Applications > Topaz Labs LLC and move the entire ‘’Topaz DeNoise AI’' folder to the trash. If you also have ‘’Topaz DeNoise AI’' in Applications, move it to the trash.

2) Delete the ‘’plist’' files of DeNoise AI. For your reference, here’s: How To Delete Your Plist Files

3) Reinstall DeNoise AI from: Topaz Labs Download Page.
Important: Once you’ve opened the installer, make sure you drag and drop ‘’Topaz DeNoise AI’' into the Application shortcut in the installer window. See video.

Hope this helps you all.
Jeff

Is it part of a suite of things from ON1? I don't think I am up to changing from Lr and C1Pro!
It can be used just like Topaz DeNoise. It can be used as a plugin for Lightroom Classic or Photoshop and it can also be used as a standalone app. It is a little hard to find the link on the ON1 site so I included it below. I believe their trial is only 14 days.

Hi all, you may have already seen this but Topaz released a fix for the Mac crash today. version 3.4.2. Here is a copy of the change log. Hope this helps.

v3.4.2
Released December 29th, 2021

Change log:

  • Added masking panel from Sharpen
  • Added preferences panel from Sharpen
  • Changed comparison view so that settings are mirrored to selected images immediately instead of just when moving settings slider
  • Changed DMG background image to better describe PS instructions and add drag and drop text
Fixes:

  • Fixed crash on open for Mac
    – This temporarily removes the Open Recent option from the File menu since it was causing the crash
  • Fixed LR template not being installed to custom catalog locations
  • Fixed PS plugin installer not updating outdated installations
  • Fixed crash when running from DMG directly
    – You can run from the DMG to demo, but still need to drag and drop to install
  • Fixed in-app update making the bundle require admin to delete
  • Fixed comparison view shifting dramatically when switching back to it in auto update mode
  • Fixed comparison view not always opening in Standard, Clear, Low Light, Severe mode on first run
  • Fixed comparison view defaulting to top-left option when saving
  • Fixed “Select All” being erroneously enabled when exporting images
  • Partial potential fix for corrupted text (some controls will still be broken like zoom, text input fields)
Known issues:

  • Masking selection will shift slightly when toggling original while in masking mode
  • There are some lingering LR template conflicts we are still trying to resolve
  • Wacom tablets may not work when panning the preview
    – If you run into issues with it sticking, please try using a mouse/touchpad

That’s very kind of you to us all Jeff! I’m on M1MaxPro 21 and have only tried a bulk edit of 4 images once! So maybe I was lucky not to crash that time. But I shall update and see how we go. I’d be confident they have (or will soon) sorted it, since they produce lots of updates as I’m sure you’ve noticed!

I bought Topaz DeNoise about 10 years ago and then when I upgraded to LR Classic I forgot about it until I was reading about it here sometime in early 2021. I was able to upgrade to the latest one at no cost! Couldn't believe it. So contact them and see if you can do it.

I have a D850 and a D5 along with the latest version of DeNoise. It is not used for all of my images but selectively with NO problems. I like it.

Did the update just after the last release. I do not use Topaz DeNoise, Sharpen as a stand alone only as a plug in to Light Room Classic. Started that after reading raves by @Steve and Matt K. and when needed occassionally a great tool. I ended up having to do two live zoom screen share sessions the second with the operations manager and his primary developer and they found a bug that they had to manually work aournd on my set up but they had others reporting same issue ... so I ended up helping with the debugging. I do not know if those bugs are fixed yet (That was shortly after Thanksgiving). Now all works very well again. I use an iMac and Mac OS Big Sur and a high speed thunder bolt 3 OWC SSD external hard drive with my images and catalog on it and store my presets with my catalog (I only use one Light Room Catalog).

Shearwater. This pic was taken in fog. I just re-edited the pic (Apple MacBook Pro M1 13", 32" BenQ 4K monitor).
1) Standalone Topaz DeNoise AI to read RAW file directly (Sony lossless compressed ARW) and output DNG.
2) Standalone Topaz Sharpen, read and write DNG.
3) Lightroom. Adjust HSL sliders with Datacolor SpyderCheckR preset. Use subject mask and invert. Add blue-green to water. Add de-haze, clarity, reduce hi-lights, increase shadows, whites, crop, import for BCG.

I think that it is amazing how much these tools have improved the last couple of months. I just purchased Topaz DeNoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel on Dec 31 for next year.
