Thank you. After getting nailed a couple years ago, Its a must! Luckily it didn't hit skin but got the side of my hiking boot and scared the hell out of me lol.
I was hiking (bush whacking) outside Portand (30 miles out) and was stepping over logs, etc in fairly dense brush. Afterwards I realized how dumb that was, at least I need to put a hiking pole, walking stick, etc where I was about step. Luckily nothing happened but could have ..

They won't go out of their way to harm you but like in my situation, I practically stepped on top of it. It was a miracle it didn't strike higher on my leg. I've seen the damage they can do and it's not pretty. Certainly not as bad as a rattlesnake but pretty bad nonetheless. Hopefully in a few more weeks they'll be gone for the year.

My wife (aka snake girl) is insanely jealous. We've been in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee for the past 3 days looking for and looking at elk. She is mad we haven't seen any snakes yet. Usually if there is a snake in 100 yards she will find it. I just showed her your photos. She loved the shots. I'm just not exactly sure what the words meant when she talked about it though. Either she was complimenting your boyish charm and good looks or she was questioning relationships with pet sheep.... just not 100% sure. (joking. she liked the photos and did say she is jealous).

Nice images. I've lived and worked in forests that are home to timber rattlesnakes for well over 50 years and have stepped over at least two that I hadn't seen. I've never worn snake boots or leggings and would not since I see no need. Of the 25-30 people who've been bitten that I've spoken to over the years only two weren't messing with the snake, and one of those was hit in the kneecap by a snake laying on a log. That's not to say I don't watch where I'm stepping, but there's no need to be paranoid.

Tell her to go out close to dark near gravel roads, trails, rocky areas and sometimes just asphalt. I moved here from NC in 2019 and there are plenty very large copperheads there.

Thanks..
Well, we just got back from a couple hikes. On our last hike, we saw a juvenile (no rattles yet) Timber Rattlesnake. I haven't gone through photos yet but no doubt what it was. Leslie is a happy girl once again. She was starting to think our little vacation to the mountains would be snakiness. :)

Steve,
I haven't really looked through my images from the day yet. These are a couple cropped and downsized to fit here of the rattlesnake we saw today. I'll see what I can do with them later and if any are worthy of being posted in their own thread in the forum.

Very nice and awesome snake.

Sweet shots! Every once in a while we have them in our back yard. One morning my wife stepped out the back door and stepped right over one, almost had a heart attack. Luckily it didn't strike at her or our little dog.

Thank you. Most of the time from ones I've known that have been bitten, It nearly takes direct contact. She and your dog were lucky.

So lucky to be able to watch and photograph theses beautiful reptiles. I am very jealous ! Just kidding ! Thanks for sharing them with us so we can enjoy their beauty
